SULLY Sports Men’s Bowls Club travelled to Llantwit Major for their second Munro Cup fixture last week and came away with a comfortable win.

The green, the weather and the inter-team banter, was excellent, with Sully Sports winning on 3 rinks, to score an aggregate victory of 71–47.

Last Saturday saw the Sports host Maesteg Celtic in the Carruthers Shield, and they enjoyed the best of the game, against opponents who had a 50-shot win in the previous week’s Shield game against Cowbridge.

The Sports won on 3 rinks and tied on the 4th, to record an 83-69 aggregate win. The home team held a slender 8 shot lead after 5 ends, maintaining it after 10 and 15 ends, and finally increasing it to 14 shots over the final 6 ends.

Lee Romans rink took the lead on the 1st end , and led to the 19th, when Maesteg scored 2 shots on the 20th end, to take the lead for the first time, but with the final wood of the final end the Sports gained the shot to tie the rink.

On Roy Roberts rink, the visitors were behind until the 12th end, and then led after the 15th, but a strong finish by the home rink secured a comfortable 24-16 win.

Graham Brown’s rink were behind until they took the lead for the first time on the 17th end and dug in for a 18-14 victory.

The biggest swings occurred on Rob Matthews rink, as from commanding leads of 13-2 after 8 ends, and 18-6 after 12 ends, Maesteg pegged them back and led 22-21 after 17 ends, and 24-21 after 19, but the home rink took 3 shots on the penultimate end to tie the scores and held their nerve with a 2 shots on the last end to run out 26-24 winners.

The Sports host Cowbridge this Saturday for their final game of the Carruthers Shield’s qualifying group, in which they will need a big aggregate win to progress to the next round.

Sully Sports Ladies Bowls Club hosted local rivals Romilly in the Evening League, last Friday.

As usual, this was a keen close fought fixture, with Sully Sports holding a 5 shot lead after 14 ends, and Romilly drawing level after 17 ends, but eventually Sully Sports retook the lead and held on for a 33-30 aggregate win.
