THE Vale of Glamorgan Football League's much-hyped 'Super Saturday' lived up fully to expectation, with changes at the top, a shock defeat for one of the front-runners and a 12-goal thriller in Division One, while the weekend's results left the promotion race looking all but over in Division Two.

The top four collided in the Premier Division as league leaders St Athan played out a 0-0 stalemate away to second place Rhoose, while FC Barry Belgrade closed the gap to three points as they performed a smash and grab on the Island, defeating Barry Athletic 1-0. Belgrade still have five games in hand over the leaders. Elsewhere in the division, Island Marine bounced back from last week’s heavy defeat to thump bottom side Penarth Town 5-1.

In Division One, the big story of the day came as table toppers Sully Sports tasted league defeat for the first time this season with a 3-1 loss to the impressive Barry Saints. Saints go third and must now be considered firm favourites for promotion to the Premier Division despite being 10 points off top spot, thanks to their three games in hand. Cardiff Airport closed the gap on Sully to four points as they won a dramatic 7-5 encounter against Cadoxton Imps. SP Billy dropped to fourth after a 0-0 blank with Cwm Talwg, with the point bringing a five game losing streak for SP to an end. Tynewydd got their a first league win in six, as they drew level on points with Cogan following a 2-1 triumph over them. Bottom side Penarth Town B closed the gap on Imps as they edged out Cadoxton Athletic with a solid 4-3 victory.

In Division Two, Josh Morgan fired a hat trick as Llantwit Major romped to a massive 12-0 win over Barry Albion. To Albion’s credit they played the game with eight players against the league leaders, who remain yet to drop a point this season. Llantwit went about their business clinically and the victory all but assures promotion to Division One in their first season back in the Vale league. Cadoxton Barry dropped to third after being held 3-3 by Vale Madrid, as BRT Dynamos moved second after a 2-1 win over Island Marine B to record their fourth straight league win. St Athan B picked up their first win in four as Paul Lucas struck twice in a 5-1 victory over ten man BV.
