LEE Selby kept up his unbeaten record with a unanimous points victory over Argentinean Jonathan Victor Barros, retaining his IBF featherweight world title just four days after the death of his mother, Frankie. Selby said that he and his family were still trying to come to terms with her death, adding she would be sadly missed by her friends and the community.

Former British Fed Cup captain Judy Murray paid a visit to Barry Leisure Centre to take a tennis workshop as part of the 'She Rallies' initiative. The mother of sporting stars Andy and Jamie, Ms Murray took a training session of women and girls in Barry aimed at promoting more female participation in sport

Barry Town United beat Newport County 2-0 in the biggest game of their pre-season calendar thanks to a brace from new boy Kayne McLaggon, but two long-serving players also departed the club in the shape of Lee Baldock and Michael Hartley. Richard Williams was also appointed as new first team coach.

Barry Athletic CC were left on the brink of the relegation zone in South East Wales Division 2, after they lost to top of the table Abergavenny by eight wickets.

BARRY Town United were unable to mark their return to the top flight of Welsh football with a win, as Aberystwyth levelled late on to earn a 1-1 draw at Jenner Park. There was controversy however, as Barry 'keeper Mike Lewis appeared to have prevented the ball from crossing the line, only for the referee to award the goal.

Town were beaten in manager Gavin Chesterfield's 350th game in charge, before a 1-0 defeat to reigning champions TNS extended their winless start.

The first Barry Island junior parkrun took place for 4-14 year olds, with 92 runners attending the first ever 2km event on the Island.

Gemma Evans was crowned ladies' champion at Brynhill Golf Club for the third successive year, while Sully Centurions CC continued their good run in the league with a derby win over Barry Wanderers.

And in the FAW Trophy, Cadoxton Barry came through the first round unscathed with a 6-0 win over Clwb Cymric.

BARRY Athletic CC narrowly avoided relegation despite a final day defeat to league champions Abergavenny, and as the cricket season came to a close the rugby one began, with Barry RFC starting their campaign with a 27-22 win against Llantwit Fadre.

Barry RFC followed up the win by beating Penarth 32-12 in their first derby game of the season and as the bowls season also concluded, Barry Athletic retained the Alun Martin trophy against Sully Sports.

There was a first league win for Barry Town United back in the top flight – a Kayne McLaggon brace helping them to a 2-0 win over Newtown, before a 3-1 victory against Carmarthen lifted them to eighth place.

Juniors took the top two spots in the Barry Island senior parkrun with Alfie Davies and Thomas Lowrie placing first and second respectively, and Barry Beavers Disabled Swimming Club were crowned Welsh champions for the first time.

Cadoxton Barry FC made it through to the third round of the FAW Trophy with a 5-2 victory over Abercarn, and the Barry Yacht Club's annual Highlight Race celebrated its 49th consecutive year.

GOALKEEPER Dan Bradley departed Barry Town United after 11 years as the club's all time Welsh league record appearance holder, having stood between the sticks no less than 261 times for the club across three divisions. Bradley was inducted into the club's hall of fame upon his departure.

Gavin Chesterfield hailed his side's 1-0 win over Bangor City as his "best ever result" in charge of Barry Town United, but an unbeaten home run of three games soon came to an end as town were beaten 3-1 by Cefn Druids.

Andrew Selby vowed to honour his late mother Frankie by becoming a boxing world champion one day, before going on to beat Mexico's Maximino Flores at York Hall in London to take his record to 10-0.

A new 10k road race planned for Barry Island next year was announced, with the event hoped to attract 3,000 runners, while the Vale of Glamorgan county pool team were promoted in their inaugural season – despite losing their unbeaten record to Neath in their final game.

Barry RFC scored a last gasp try to beat Cardiff Quins 27-23, before victory over Clwb Rygbi sealed a fifth win in six for the club.

FORTY runners recorded new personal bests as Barry Island parkrun hosted a pacing event, with pacemakers from a local running club helping participants to gauge their times to perfection.

A slump in form for Barry Town United saw them lose four in a row – including exiting the Nathaniel MG Cup at the hands of Cardiff Met – before they bounced back with a sensational win over TNS. Kayne McLaggon scored the only goal as Town recorded the biggest upset of the Welsh Premier League season so far.

And there was good news for Barry Town United ladies as they progressed to the semi-finals of the South Wales Women's FA Cup with a 5-2 win over Cwmbran Celtic.

Lee Selby's world title defence against unbeaten Mexican Eduardo Ramirez was confirmed for December, and Barry Kyokushin Karate Club claimed five British titles at the national karate championships.

LEE Selby recorded yet another unanimous points win at London's Copper Box Arena, beating Eduardo Ramirez to take his professional record to 26 wins and one defeat from 27 fights.

Barry Town Utd were knocked out of Welsh Cup after a 2-0 loss away to Caernarfon, but moved up to sixth in the league thanks to their Boxing Day win over Cardiff Met.

Barry RFC left it late again to beat Llanishen 19-16 with the last kick of the game, following that up with a scrappy 9-7 win over Llantwit Fadre, and former Ysgol Bro Morgannwg pupil Sion Jones signed his first professional rugby league contract with Championship side Halifax RLFC.
