Abercarn 2-5 Cadoxton Barry F.C.

Adamson 2, Oaten, Jackhontaw, Weekley.

CADOXTON Barry F.C. won through to the third round of the FAW Trophy for the first time in the club's history with a comprehensive victory against a side that plies it's trade in division one of the Gwent County League - one level above Cadoxton Barry.

Cadoxton Barry's opening play was as bright and attractive as their scenic surroundings, a Morgan attempt from the right being well blocked by the 'keeper very early on, before shortly after Dawson, spotting the 'keeper forward, tried a long rang shot that dipped just over the bar. Oaten's fine volley was also met with an equally good save from the 'keeper early on.

With CB comfortably in charge a goal looked imminent, though it came from an unexpected quarter as full back Adamson set off on a whippet-like charge down his wing before sending over a powerful cross-cum-shot from fully 35 yards out to the right. And from the moment he struck it there was only one place it was going to end up - in the back of the far left of the net.

It took 23 minutes to get that first goal but it took only another five to score a second as a pinball session in the home goalmouth saw two shots blocked, before Jackhontaw toe-poked a little dink up and over the 'keeper as he came forward.

And two minutes later the game looked all over as a contest when a bit of Dawson magic out to the right saw him clip the ball up and over his marker before running around him to send over a pinpoint cross that allowed Oaten to pass the ball into an empty net.

With thirty minutes gone Aber started to engineer a couple of dangerous looking breakaways, but the one that got them back into the game was a little controversial as a long ball saw the forward looking a couple of yards off side.

But with Cadoxton Barry's backline failing to adhere to the age-old warning of playing to the whistle, the ball was dispatched into their net to give the hosts some hope for the second half.

And just two minutes into the half, a horrendous misunderstanding between CB 'keeper Stringer and his defence allowed the hosts in for a gift-wrapped goal to reduce the arrears still further.

CB continued to press as Curran fired just over from a Morgan corner, but with nearly an hour on the clock Abercarn had turned the tables and CB found themselves under pressure in defending their slender lead.

Adamson came to the rescue with a number of last ditch clearances as Abercarn turned the screw.

And it took a moment of magic from man-of-the-match, Adamson to finally turn the game's fortunes firmly back in Cadoxton Barry's favour. A free kick was awarded close to the half way line, just inside the CB half and with Adamson stepping up he caught the 'keeper off guard with a strike that sailed into the top left of the net.

Second team prospect Yeoman was brought into the action for the final minutes and as confidence returned CB nearly scored again, a Morgan corner setting up a goal mouth melee from which Dawson fired over from six feet.

But when a free kick taken by substitute Constant bounced in space on the edge of the Abercarn box, Yeoman added the flick on needed for Weekley to rise and head home just inside the left hand post to make the final score more reflective of Cadoxton Barry's overall superiority.

Next Saturday Cadoxton Barry stay in cup mode when they take the road to Ynyshir for a W John Owen Highadmit South Wales Alliance League Cup tie. Kick off is at 2.30pm.
