VARIABLE weather failed to dampen the spirits of competitors in the two major tournaments recently held at Wenvoe Castle Golf Club.

The long standing Castle Trophy is a challenging medal competition, with best gross score taking the coveted prize. Winner Nick James posted an excellent gross score of 70 to win by two strokes from Liam McVeigh. Paul Wheatley picked up third place with a gross 74.

The President’s Bowl, a stableford competition, is open to both ladies and gentlemen and attracted over 130 entries.

In a very close finish, the winner was Steve Grinter who posted an impressive score of 41 points to beat Wayne Adams by the narrowest of margins, using count back. The pair finished just one point ahead of Jonathon Ponsford who scraped home in third place - again on countback - from Nick James.

The prize for the best ladies' score went to captain Helen Hughes, who posted an impressive 37 points.

The club president Colin Champ thanked the club members for such huge support on the day and kindly provided superbly cut glass trophies, together with an excellent buffet for the competitors.

He also thanked the bar and catering staff for their excellent service throughout a long day and also the green-keeping staff for presenting the course in such a first class condition.

The club was also very busy off the course and the annual captain’s charity dance was held to raise funds for nominated charity, The Stroke Association.

Club captain Kota Dayananda was delighted with the support, with a nigh-on full house turning out for the themed ‘Blues Evening’, which included an auction of donated prizes to raise funds for the charity.

Colin Champ, who auctioneered, showed remarkable skills laced with humour to extract bids from anyone who dared to move their hands, and a final total of almost £1,200 was raised.
