BARRY Rugby Club have begun their pre-season preparations with victory over Division 3 outfit Treharris, in a friendly at the Reservoir Field last Saturday.

With the game split into twenty minute periods and rolling substitutes allowed, the game lacked continuity but nevertheless provided a highly entertaining afternoon of rugby that was sadly cut short, due to a serious injury suffered by one of the Treharris players.

The skill level of both sides was to be admired and the final score of 15-5 to Barry was an indication of the defensive strength on show.

It was the visitors who scored first when quick recycling from an early penalty caught the Barry defence out of position, leaving Treharris to spread play out wide out for an unconverted try.

Playing into a strong breeze, Barry were struggling to make their possession count and despite some promising attacking moves with ball in hand, a lack of game time led to inevitable breakdowns.

A superb penalty from Barross over 50m out finally got Barry on the scoreboard, as both sides' attacking intent grew.

With play becoming increasingly fast and open, the visitors got close on more than one occasion to the Barry try-line, but were unable to cross.

With changes being made in the latter periods, Barry began to exert pressure but struggled to find a way through a solid defence. Eventually, it was a powerful display of forward strength that created the space for Rhys O'Sullivan to drive over to give Barry the lead. Barros added the conversion to put the home side 10-5 in front.

With both defences remaining tough to break down, Barry were made to work hard to extend their lead.

After the Barry number eight had gained some superiority up front, he provided good ball for the backs to attack and a series of drives saw them into the visitors 22.

Fast hands following a quick penalty saw space created for Perry to cross for a well worked try, and with no conversion Barry moved into a 15-5 lead.

Minutes later, the unfortunate injury led to the referee calling the game off.

Pre-season continues next Saturday when Barry entertain Lydney - a side that have hosted Barry for the past two years - in what is likely to be another tough encounter.

A lottery winner still proves impossible to find as last weeks numbers; 3, 16, 17 and 18, were not matched. The jackpot this week will be £5,750.
