A SPORTING programme run by the Vale of Glamorgan Council saw 28 primary school pupils complete the Bronze Ambassador training.

Year five pupils from five Barry schools were among those who took part in the Holm View Leisure centre training day on Tuesday, June 27.

Two children from each school were nominated as role models by their peers, and will go on to organise games and activities during lunchtimes and after school.

The aim of the young ambassador movement is to empower and inspire young people to become role models and leaders through sport.

The children took part in games and activities that taught them how to lead small sessions thinking about how to include everyone.

As part of an initiative launched by Sport Wales, senior women’s hockey player Beth Fisher met the children after their session to teach them about what makes a good leader.

She said: "The children taking part in the Bronze Young Ambassador scheme have shown excellent leadership skills and a passion for inspiring others. It’s great to know sport in primary schools is safe in the hands of these 28 children.”

Councillor Gordon Kemp, cabinet member for social care, health and leisure said: "This initiative is a great way to get children involved in sport across the Vale, and learning about leadership skills from a top Welsh hockey player is a great opportunity.

"Well done to all the pupils who completed the Bronze Ambassador training, I hope they can use their new skills in the new school term this September."
