Munro Cup: Cadoxton v Murch

Wednesday, July 19

Hosts Murch emerged victorious in the annual Munro Cup fixture, claiming the Colin Reynolds Memorial Cup in the process as they won the tie against Cadoxton by 14 shots.

Cadoxton had held supremacy in the fixture over the past few years, but on this occasion wins in Roger Mauchline's and Mike Hughes' rinks were enough to grant Murch the win.

The other two rinks, skipped by Alan Perry against Don Kuhnell and Tony Williams against Phil Ellis were successful for Cadoxton, but it was not enough for the visitors to claim victory.

Phil Ellis had built up a commanding 15-4 advantage, only for a ‘six’ against to narrow the gap. Four shots each were scored in the remaining ends to narrowly hand Cadoxton the rink.

Don Kuhnell also had a solid 16-8 lead but failed on the last three ends to win by just two shots, needing a last ball saviour to prevent a tied score.

Howard Craven never managed to get into the game, managing just four winning ends throughout the game. Derek Jeffries rink ran out of steam after a ‘five’ had given them a 19-14 lead, only to concede fourteen shots against in the remaining ends.

ML5: Cadoxton v Ely

Saturday, July 22

There was a better result for Cadoxton when they completed a season double in their visit to Ely, taking a narrow contest by seven shots.

Two successful rinks, together with a tied one, were enough to compensate for a calamitous result on the fourth, in which Cadoxton played 12 losing ends before registering their first score when trailing 26-0.

Once again it was Kelvin Chedgzoy taking the honours in his rink with a resounding 33-13 win. This was the fifth occasion during which Chedgzoy has topped the 30 shots mark in recent weeks.

The match started cagily and Cadoxton were 7-9 behind after seven ends, but a ‘four’ and ‘five’ on the following two ends gave them a boost and they continued, losing on just three of the remaining ends.

Howard Craven’s rink started well, going 11-3 up after 10 ends. Five shots were lost over the next four ends however they recovered well and doubled their score during the remainder of the rink.

On Roy Harding’s rink a ‘five’ was scored by both sides during the early stages and Cadoxton reached the half-way stage with an 11-10 advantage. A good run brought them eight shots in succession, however nine shots were then scored against to level the scores at the end.

Munro Cup: Cadoxton v Sully

Wednesday, July 26

Cadoxton returned to their good form in the Munro Cup earning a convincing home win against Sully.

There were good wins for the rinks skipped by Howard Craven and Don Kuhnell, both by a margin of 15 shots. Despite a late withdrawal leaving him a player short, there was also a win for Jim Davies who skipped his triple to success despite the penalty for playing with a player short - a ‘four’ on the penultimate end, ensuring victory.

Kelvin Chedgzoy skipped the fourth rink and although the rink held the lead for most of the game, they had to recover after conceding a ‘three’ and ‘five’ to tie the game late on.

Don Kuhnell’s four kept the pressure on throughout with just four losing ends, while Howard Craven's rink remained dominant from the outset.

E Heppenstall, J Papoutsou, I Heppenstall, K Chedgzoy 17-17

J Stacey, D Hammond, I Robertson, D Kuhnell 22-7

G Solomon, S Clarke, P Ellis, H Craven 24-9

Cadoxton 76½-44 Sully

ML5: Cadoxton v Belle Vue

Saturday, July 29

A second league double in successive weeks was completed by Cadoxton when they hosted Belle Vue, winning by a comfortable 30 shots.

Roy Harding, with Les Aubrey as his opposing skip, was well in control in the early stages accumulating a 13-4 lead. This increased to 19-7 before the visitors had a run of singles towards the end to reduce the deficit to seven shots.

Kelvin Chedgzoy continued his good form against David Purser, although the early stages suggested a tight affair. After 12 ends the scores were level at seven apiece, but the home side took over and scored heavily towards the end.

This left two rinks playing their last end, both with handy leads, and a full house looked likely.

Don Kuhnell’s rink against Trevor Ford saw the visitors display a preference for a full length jack, but they were largely restricted to singles. When possible the mat length was changed and Cadoxton started controlling the game, giving them a six shot lead going into the final end. A full length jack left them five shots down when the skips went to play the final bowls, only for Don to draw the shot and salvage the win.

There was a similar finish on Howard Craven’s rink, in which Cadoxton held a four shot advantage and seemed well on target to achieve the win, holding three shots when the skips were left to play. The visitor’s captain, Malcolm Thomas put an end to that by moving the jack to make four in their favour. And then drew another shot with his last to take the points.

J Papoutsou, D Evans, R Byrne, K Chedgzoy 25 - 8

G Solomon, S Clarke, P Ellis, H Craven 21 – 22

W Craven, A Prince, J Davies, R Harding 21 – 14
