A VERY busy weekend of competition golf teed off on Friday with the well supported Ladies Open Day which attracted golfers from clubs throughout the region and beyond. It coincided with probably the hottest temperatures of the year but a gentle breeze created very pleasant playing conditions on a course that maintained its reputation of being one of the best in in the principality.

The competition was a team format with prizes for the top scores for both home players and visitors.

The winning home team was Brenda Tomczyck, Tina Church and Lesley Arnold with an impressive score of 82 points. In second place were Linda Marples, Mags Lewis and Sian Thomas who were just a single point behind with 81 points.

The winning visitors team was Anne Fernandez-Lewis, Bethan Griffiths and Sian Jones from Creigiau Golf Club who played well to score 80 points on an away course. They won in a tight finish on countback from Cheryl Henderson, Steph Bonner and Carolyn McKenzie who also posted 80 points.

In parallel with the main competition there were several other prizes on offer and Yvonne Higginbottom (Glamorganshire Golf Club) won the Nearest the Pin contest with a shot landing just 54 inches from the hole. Sarah Jones of Gog Magog Golf Club won the longest drive and Anne Fernandez-Lewis, Thelme Davies, Yvonne Higgingbottom and Brenda Tomczyck all scored a two and shared a haul of balls.

Lady Captain Helen Hughes thanked all the members and visitors for supporting the highly popular event and special thanks to the green staff for their presentation of the course. The efforts of the members who manned the registration desk, the halfway house and starters were appreciated and Wendy Motton was specially thanked for the excellent organisation of the day.

On Saturday Meirion Evans posted the top score to win the Renwick Seniors competition and will see his name on the honours board while Nick James returned the best score of 42 points in the Youngers Stableford. Nick now back in the amateur ranks after a spell on the Professional circuit showed his remarkable ability in posting 7 birdies in a score of just 66 strokes around a very challenging golf course.

On Sunday Pat Regan won the June Medal with a net 69 just ahead of Howard Hitchcock on 70 who played the shot of the day to score a two on the 297 yard 4th hole.

The long weekend was completed with the well supported Mixed Competition which was won by Wendy Motton and Russell Owens with an excellent score of 45 points. The trophy for the long standing competition was donated by former member Betty Broadbent who would have been absolutely delighted to see her very good friend Wendy win the competition for the first time and coincidently win it on her birthday. The Wenvoe Castle Choir gave a decent chorus of happy birthday to round of an excellent weekend of golf and celebrations.
