AFTER last week’s celebrations and the 100th event things were a little quieter and normal.

Saturday saw a sunny start to the 101st Barry Island parkrun and it was a coincidence that saw 101 runners take on the course watched over by 23 volunteers covering both marshalling positions and finish funnel roles.

Of the 101runners, 16 were first timers to Barry Island parkrun and 25 runners gained new personal best times and there were participants of 12 different running clubs both local and from other parts of the country.

On Saturday, the Vale Coastal Ultra Marathon took place along the Wales Coastal Path, with participants starting on Penarth Pier and covering an impressive distance of 33.5 miles on their way to Ogmore-By-Sea.

The route included part of the Barry Island parkrun course with participants running through the finish area and along the promenade before going out onto Friar’s point.

Barry Island parkrun was represented at this year’s event by co-event director Ian Thorne, run director Dave Shields and core team member Andrea Hurman. All made it to the finish line in one piece.

As far as this week’s results are concerned it was a clean sweep for the junior ladies, taking first, second and third places.

Moli Lyons, a member of Barry and Vale Harriers, was first lady and came in eighth overall with an impressive time of 20.47, Evie Watkins, also a member of Barry and Vale Harriers was second lady and came in 22nd overall with a time of 22.54 while in third place was Caitlin Williams of Seriously Mad runners (Barry), 26th overall with a time of 23.27.

Overall top three positions were male and went to Gareth Hurman in a time of 18.05. Second place was an unknown runner while third position went to Stuart Luffman a member of Clapham Chasers with a time of 19.20

Barry Island parkrun is for participants of all abilities. The course can be run, jogged or walked.

There is no time limit to the event and all our marshals will stay at their posts to clap and cheer every single person until the last participant crosses the finishes line.

It’s not just for runners, Barry Island parkrun needs at least 15 volunteers each week in order to hold the event safely, if you’d like to get involved then you can get in touch by email at barryislandhelpers@parkrun.com or visit the Facebook page for all the latest information facebook.com/barryislandparkrun
