BARRY-BASED Rising Dragons Tae Kwon Do took to the tournament circuit again on February 26 with the team attending the KMA Wales and WMAC Welsh Open 2017, hosted by Robert Taylor in Pontypool.

The tournament consisted of points fighting, where the competitors reset after every point is scored and continuous fighting where the points are added over the length of a fight.

The team showed true fighting spirit, doing everything their fight coaches asked of them throughout the days event.

In the points categories, Oakley Allen came away with a first place trophy for his height category, then fought up a category but was unlucky against a taller fighter.

Thea Cunningham fought her way to the final, coming away with a well deserved second place, Maddison Allen came up against some tough opposition in her height class, but still came away with a third place trophy. Matthew Bennett took home a third place.

In the continuous fight categories based on weight, Oakley Allen again performed brilliantly making it to his final, just missing out on the win, coming away with a second place.

Thea Cunningham fought hard and won a third place, Cody Jacobsen turned on the style to dominate his group coming away with first place, Cian Allen had some tough, larger competitors to deal with but still performed well with a third place finish, Joel Wells continued to show grit and determination in his fights making it all the way to the final and coming second, Matthew Bennett again showed that whatever the student can do, the instructor can match by winning his category.

Charlie Rogers fought hard throughout her tournament, but as you sometimes find at these fast paced events, scoring strikes are missed by officials so on this occasion she came away empty handed, but full of knowledge.

The next event for the Rising Dragons students comes this weekend, when the team take on their tallest challenger yet, a sponsored hike up Pen-Y-Fan.
