SULLY Sports will be hoping to go one better in this season’s FAW Trophy as they prepare for Saturday’s semi-final clash against Penlan at Port Talbot Town at 2pm.

Jimmy Blackie’s side were the beaten finalists last season as they suffered a 1 - 0 defeat against Abergavenny Town at Dragon Park.

But they will be aiming to go one step further this time around in a competition which they won back in 2012.

After a strong start to the league campaign in which they won six out of their first seven games, Sully have beaten AC Pontymister, Maltsters Sports, Carno FC and Team Swansea en route to the last four of the FAW Trophy.

And Blackie is hoping his players can rise to the occasion once again at Victoria Road and seal a place in next month’s final against either Llangefni Town or Chirk AAA.

“To win six of the first seven games was great for us, but it’s the performances in the cup that have kept our season alive,” he said.

“We have a good record in the competition – winning it once before and reaching the final last year – so it has been a bit of a lucky cup for us.

“Hopefully we click again on Saturday and get to the final.

"But if we get through then we will face a North Wales club in the final so that will be a little like going into the unknown after playing against teams in the south.”

Meanwhile, Sully’s semi-final opponents are enjoying a fine season so far in the Swansea Senior League.

Penlan currently sit third in the table having won 10 of their 13 league games and sit just two points off top spot.

“We played Penlan a couple of years ago, and they are a very good side,” said Blackie.

“I have no doubt that it will be a very tight game.

“We played Team Swansea – who feature at the same level as Penlan – in the last round and they were excellent.

“But we know that if we can get it right then we are capable of beating anyone on our day.”
