Barry Town United 1 v Penybont 1

IT WAS billed as the Welsh League's match of the weekend and despite the goals coming relatively early, Barry Town's division one clash with hotly-tipped Penybont proved a compelling affair, with the spoils shared at Jenner Park in a keenly-contested 1 - 1 draw.

With an action-starved crowd of 485 witnessing a first home match since November 19, the roof was raised in the 11th minute as Louis Gerrard curled a fine free kick into the top corner; the midfielder scoring his second goal of the campaign to put Barry a goal to the good.

Rhys Griffiths' visitors though had little intention of rolling over and the Town's slender advantage would last for a mere matter of minutes before Joe Hopkins pulled Penybont level, beating goalkeeper Mike Lewis for only the ninth time in Barry's 13 Welsh League outings to date.

With both teams carving out opportunities to go on and win the game, Penybont might have been most disappointed to not turn their possession and attacking territory into a full three points, although Barry had the better chances in a hard-fought second half; spurning one attempt from six yards out and seeing another set piece deflected agonisingly into the side netting.

Left to settle for the single point, Barry remain unbeaten at Jenner Park in first division play, with Cwmbran Celtic next to challenge their record on Saturday, February 4. This coming Saturday meanwhile sees the Town travel to former champions Monmouth Town, in a 2pm kick-off.

Tickets for the forthcoming Nathaniel MG Cup Final against The New Saints are still on sale, available to collect from the Jenner Suite this and next Thursday between 6pm and 8pm.

Prices are £7 for adults and £3 for concessions, with tickets sold in advance of the final - to be played at Cardiff Met FC, a 5.15pm kick-off on Saturday, January 21 - providing the club with a percentage kickback from the Football Association of Wales.
