NEW tennis and golf sessions will be starting later this month in a bid to get more youngsters involved in sport.

Delivered by the Vale of Glamorgan Council, in partnership with local voluntary organisations, the new sessions will aim to get more girls and two to four-year-olds playing the two sports.

The first is a beginners’ tennis programme for girls designed by Judy Murray, mother of tennis superstars Andy and Jamie Murray.

Part of the council’s Girls on the Move campaign, Miss Hits is aimed at girls aged between five and eight-years-old, with the sessions designed to ensure girls not only develop their tennis skills, but, more importantly, have fun and make new friends.

The weekly one hour sessions will take place at Barry Leisure Centre. Starting from Tuesday, January 10, between 4pm and 5pm, they will be delivered by Penny Mickelsen, of Barry Community Tennis Club.

The cost of the six week course is £30. Anyone wanting more information, or to book a space, should contact Penny on 07816 311263 or email penny@valetennisacademy.co.uk.

The second is a new pre-school golf programme aimed at two to four-year-olds.

Delivered in partnership with Cottrell Park Golf Club, as part of their Skratch programme, the sessions will be taking place over six weeks at The Hub, Barry YMCA. They start on January 12, and run Thursday mornings between 9.30am and 10.30am.

Golfing toddlers will get the chance to develop their movement skills and hand-eye co-ordination through fun sessions which will cost £3.

Anyone wanting more information or to book a space should contact golf professional Gareth Bennett on 07980 656659.
