Cornelly Utd 0 - Cadoxton Barry FC 3

Jackhontaw 2, Sansome

IT IS rare for a side lying third in any league to have a negative goal difference.

But that was exactly the situation for Cadoxton Barry football club before a win that brought an end to a recent poor run of results.

Indeed, the reason for this strange set of circumstances became apparent in a game that was dominated by the visitors from start to finish but saw chances continually created only to be foiled by either the hosts offside trap, the taking of wrong final options, or the bobbly pitch creating sometimes comedic scuffs and falls.

Thus it was just as well that some of the more difficult opportunities were converted.

An early Konten free kick towards the right hand post saw Dawson rise to make headed contact, only to hear the whistle blow for a foul.

While at the other end a Cornelly corner saw the towering figure of Curran rising to head clear.

Oaten then sent a cross over from the right. It scurried across the face of goal and only needed a toe poke to see it home, but stretch as they may, neither of the two forwards were able to make the connection.

Then it was Oaten who found himself in an excellent position following clever play by Konten. However, a slight scuff coupled with the deceleration applied by the pitch, ensured that the 'keeper had time to collect.

A Cadoxton Barry free kick saw Curran heading over the bar before another saw the 'keeper fumbling but finally gathering from the Konten effort.

Cornelly came back with a move down the left only to see the final shot go high and wide.

With five minutes left of the half CB were looking frustrated as, for all their control, they were simply unable to put the ball in the net.

But the goal that did eventually break the deadlock was well worth waiting for.

The move started with Weekley, involving Dawson, Konten and Oaten. And it was Oaten who spotted that Weekley had gone on an overlap to feed him the perfect pass to him out on the right wing.

Then another well measured cross from Weekley toward the far left post found Sansome perfectly placed to net with a top quality flying header from quite an acute angle.

Cadoxton Barry continued to press for the remaining five minutes of the half, but went in with just the single goal advantage to show for all their efforts.

Cornelly won an early second half corner from the left, Walsh doing well to block the resulting shot at the far post.

The dazzling sun shining from a cloudless sky was not only making life difficult for both sets of players, but also, by his own admission at the half-time break, an excellent referee.

A ball out to Konten saw his cross set-up an open goal for Dawson just a couple of feet out, but he got all tangled up when it would have been easier to score than to miss - which is what he did.

Then an Oaten chipped cross saw it blocked on the line before Sansome returned the rebound high over the bar.

On the 55 minute mark Jackhontaw came on for Berry to see his first touch of the ball double Cadoxton Barry's lead.

Curran had been commanding in the air from the start, but this time, from a Constant free kick, he demonstrated a neat little bit of footwork to touch the ball on to Jackhontaw who gratefully accepted to strike for home from the right.

A handling offence in the box saw Cadoxton Barry awarded a penalty.

Walsh decided to employ power at the expense of accuracy - the ball going well wide and well over.

And Cadoxton Barry continued to go for the spectacular as Samsome tried an overhead scissor kick from the left side of the box.

That was his final contribution as Harris came on to the field in his place.

Cornelly were going forward on only rare occasions, though they did earn a free kick that could have promised more had a forward not been in an offside position.

Whilst the score continued to flatter the hosts, Cadoxton Barry's third goal did better reflect the visitors' overall control of the match.

The 'keeper was only able to parry a powerful Konten shot which came back towards Jackhontaw who needed no second invite as he dug the ball out from under to stroke home in the 78th minute.

With time running out a further long range Cadoxton Barry shot rebounded off the Cornelly left post. But in the end it was a comfortable win for Cadoxton Barry, though the score didn't quite reflect their overall command of the proceedings.

Next Saturday Cadoxton Barry stay on the road when they make the short trip to Cwrt-yr-Ala, Ely where Clwb Cymric will play host at 2pm.
