Barry Town 1 - Cardiff Met 0

UNDERDOGS Barry Town United sensationally booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Nathaniel MG Cup on Tuesday, October 4, with an impressive 1 - 0 win over Welsh Premier League opposition.

After forward James Dixon had been bundled over in the box, Bobby Briers’ 67th-minute spot kick proved enough to see off Cardiff Met at a floodlit Jenner Park, watched by a crowd of around 300 spectators.

The Archers had been awarded a penalty of their own within moments of Barry’s opener, only for goalkeeper Mike Lewis to pull out a crucial save, preserving the Town’s slender advantage.

Barry’s best chance in open play came when Dixon struck the crossbar before the break and while the Met enjoyed their fair share of possession over the course of the 90 minutes, the visitors were unable to break down a resolute Town defence, inspired by the returning Lewis Cosslett.

The Town's first competitive victory over Welsh Premier League adversaries for more than 12 years and their first home win in the newly-expanded competition since September 2001, attention now switches to the Friday’s quarter-final draw (October 7), as Gavin Chesterfield's squad continue their pursuit for senior silverware on four fronts.

Barry Town: Mike Lewis, Bobby Briers, Luke Cooper, Lewis Cosslett, Chris Hugh, James Saddler (C), Louis Gerrard, Jordan Cotterill, Tyrell Webbe, James Dixon, Michael Hartley. Subs: Nathan Mathias, Lee Baldock, Dan Bradley, TJ Nagi (for Cotterill), Kareem Leigh (for Dixon).
