WENVOE Castle Golf Club are founder members of the Hallett Golf Society which was set up in south east Wales just after the Second World War and now has a membership of 37 golf clubs covering a wide geographical area from Brecon down to Penarth and from Maesteg in the west across to Newport in the east.

The society provides the opportunity for higher handicap golfers to represent their clubs within a league format together with a knock-out competition known as the Jim Davies Cup.

To win either the Hallett League Trophy or the Jim Davies Cup requires considerable success over several months of competitive golf and this year Wenvoe Castle found the winning formula to win the knock-out trophy for the first time since 2008.

Along the way to the final the club defeated Newport, Virginia Park, Morlais Castle and eventually Dinas Powys in the semi-final on a home and away basis. The final is traditionally played at Wenvoe Castle but to avoid home advantage a neutral course, Pyle and Kenfig was selected where they would meet their opponents Woodlake Park.

With handicaps limited to 18 and over the matches are played in a foursomes format and after 18 holes of keenly contested golf the two teams couldn’t be separated with the score ending up at 2 - 2.

Sudden death was required and each captain was required to select a pair to contest the sudden death, a daunting prospect for the players selected. Team captain Viv Hulbert selected Keith Holgate and Peter Tarry who comfortably won their earlier match and their momentum was maintained as they won the sudden death play-off on the first hole.

Club captain Paul Coombs congratulated the team on winning the prestigious trophy and in particular the way the team had represented the club throughout the competition.
