SULLY Centurions Cricket Club entertained Cardiff Gymkhana on Saturday and narrowly lost a low scoring encounter by one wicket.

Sully batted first and skipper Santosh Singh led from the front with a well-made 50 which included nine boundaries and at 91 for 2 Centurions were looking good for a decent score. However, the introduction of spinner Ashish Patel turned the game on its head, as he took five wickets for just 15 runs, leaving Centurions all out for just 111.

But when Gymkhana batted they soon came unstuck when Bharat claimed four wickets for 38 and Santosh followed his batting display with bowling figures of 1 for 26, including five maidens, in his 10 overs.

The visitors were reduced to 76 for 7, but a ninth wicket partnership of 35 saw them home by one wicket, as Sully were unable to get the all-important final wicket.

The 2nd XI travelled to Llandaff Fields for the reverse fixture against Gymkhana 2nd XI, who are top of the league, and came away with a remarkable four wicket victory.

The home side batted first and were soon in trouble – losing two wickets for just 19. But a couple of half century stands helped the hosts to a total of 189 all out. Grover (49) and Hameed (51) were top scorers for Gymkhana.

A few dropped catches didn’t help the Sully cause, but once again Gethin and Jason Hicks bagged a couple of wickets each, giving Centurions a fighting chance.

After tea Russell Thomas and Luke Burnett shared a half century partnership before both fell victim to Grover. But Ricky Griffett and Ben Spear put on 61 for the third wicket, to keep Centurions in the hunt.

Then youngsters Aron Arthur and Gethin Hicks both found gaps in the field – putting on another 45 and keeping up with the required run rate. It was down to Herbie Miller and Jason Hicks to see Sully home in the last over, Herbie hitting the winning runs with five balls left.
