VISITORS to Jenner Park were treated to pre-season football last week, as Barry Town United kicked-off their run of home friendlies against high quality opposition from Newport County and Cardiff City.

On Tuesday evening, July 19, goals from Louis Gerrard, Ryan Evans, Michael Hartley and Kareem Leigh, in addition to an own goal, helped Barry to a 5-2 win over the Exiles.

Played in significant heat, the fixture was notable for the inclusion of a number of new faces in the Barry team, not least former Cardiff City and Carmarthen Town man Tyrell Webbe, who impressed the Jenner Park crowd on his home debut and signed later in the week.

Then, Saturday afternoon, July 23, saw a Bluebirds XI that included former Town loan signing Jamie Bird win the annual pre-season challenge by five goals to one, on what was a glorious summer's day in the Barry sunshine.

In front of around 750 spectators, Cardiff took the lead through Marco Weymans; only for Barry to equalise via a Bobby Briers penalty, after striker James Dixon had been upended.

While Dixon and teammate Rhys James would each have opportunities to put Town ahead, the visiting Bluebirds scored twice in quick succession at the end of the first half to put the game beyond the hosts; Rollin Menayese heading home, before Weymans netted from a goalmouth scramble.

Weymans would complete his hat-trick shortly after the interval and, with both teams making second half changes, City substitute Jarrad Welch fired home from long range to wrap up proceedings in the 90th minute.

Barry return to Jenner Park this weekend for a rare Wales versus England affair, as Hellenic League outfit Moreton Rangers provide the opposition - 3pm kick-off.

Saturday's fixture is a rematch of a 2013 friendly in Moreton-in-Marsh, a match Gavin Chesterfield's Town won by a single goal to nil.

Former Barry manager Gary Barnett will be part of the travelling Rangers party, two decades after leading the Town to an unprecedented run in the 1996-97 UEFA Cup.

The Jenner Park outfit will then continue their preparations for the upcoming Welsh League Division One campaign with a short trip to Ely Rangers on Tuesday evening - kick-off 7.30pm.
