BARRY Romilly Bowls Club welcomed Caerphilly Town Bowls Club to Romilly Park on Saturday hoping to regain their form having suffered a 12 – 2 loss the previous week at Gelli Park.

Romilly have lost a little of last season's sparkle and were looking to a strong Caerphilly side to ignite their fire. In previous week's Romilly players have been a little slow in finding line and length but after the first five ends the home team had moved into a eight shot lead 21 – 13.

The rinks of Jeff Coles, Paul Williams, Mike Doyle and skip Graham Cogbill and Jeff Wrights rink of Alan Bryan, Roger Jones and Clive Collins were both leading by six and seven shots respectively, and were responsible for this advantage.

As the game continued it was becoming evident that the three Caerphilly Welsh players Marc Wyatt, Ian Henderson and Martin Selway were going to have a major input to the final result. By the tenth end though Romilly held a 10 shot advantage mainly due to Wright's rink firing on all cylinders taking their lead to 17 shots.

The rink of Kelvyne Mills, Terry Bloomfield, Mel Newman and skip Brian Foscolo were playing well against Henderson’s rink with the away rink holding a slender one shot lead, whilst Cogbill’s rink playing against the brilliant Selway were just holding a one shot advantage.

Rhodri Phillips on his debut as skip for Romilly supported by Phil Gershenson, Gwynne Rees and Andrew Hatcher were up against an inform Marc Wyatt’s rink who were pulling off some brilliant bowls to hold a seven shot advantage at this stage 4 – 11.

Between ends 11 and 15 Caerphilly began to pressurise the Romilly rinks with the exception of Wright’s rink as the away side went from a deficit of 10 shots into a nine shot lead

but thanks to Wright’s rink which held a 21 shot advantage 25 – 4 helping to keep the deficit to just the nine shots 48 – 57.

Over the last six ends it was going to be interesting to see how the Romilly players reacted to chasing down their deficit, two rinks fought hard to reduce their deficit’s namely Foscolo and Phillips’s rinks with Kelvyne Mills bowling some outstanding lead bowls on Foscolo’s rink who won five out of the six ends but unfortunately dropping two on the last end and losing by those two shots 13 – 15.

Phillips’s rinks won the last six ends 8 – 4 with Phillips in particular producing some excellent woods in his baptism against the outstanding Wyatt losing 13 – 24. The rink of Cogbill lost their fourth game in a row unheard of until now with their result disappointing losing 13 – 34 after being 10 – 9 ahead at the tenth end.

Although Romilly had been struggling, thanks to Wright’s rink, the game was still in the balance going into the final end even with Wright making a two to win their game by 27 shots 34 – 7 Romilly lost overall 73 – 80 taking just two points for the second game running.

This Saturday’s game is away to Ferndale who are returning to winning ways therefore Romilly players need to improve on current form to have any chance of coming away with a victory.

The only side going well currently is the Munro Cup team who remain unbeaten and have two home games this week, Wednesday versus Belle Vue and Thursday against Barry Athletic in a re-arranged fixture.

The Romilly A team suffered a 2 – 12 loss away to Thomastown on Saturday.
