THE Munro Cup match at Victoria Park, between Cadoxton Bowls Club and Sully Sports, resulted with both sides winning two rinks each, but the aggregate going in favour of the visitors.

Howard Craven’s rink scored a four on the opening end against Keith Roman’s rink, but a four against on the sixth end took away the lead. However the advantage was recovered on the 12th and held until the end.

Don Kuhnell also scored a four on the first end against Charles Coomber, and the ascendancy was held throughout the game. After 11 ends the score had reached 18 – 5, but the visitors rallied in the closing stages and were successful in five of the last seven, very tight ends, with one end tied, but not enough for victory.

John Jones skipped against Bob Matthews and struggled to stay in the game, scoring just a single during the opening six ends. A mini revival brought six shots in three ends, but a further four ends were lost, before a spirited reply improved the position with eight shots in the final ends.

On the final rink skip Kelvin Chedgzoy met previous Cadoxton player Graham Brown who had an advantage of knowing the green better than the home players. This showed throughout the game and a comprehensive result went in the visitors favour.

Cadoxton A side came out on top in their home ML7 match with Central.

Rob Byrne skipped a winning rink against Tom Goddard. The home side took an early 6 - 0 advantage, only to drop behind 8 - 9 on the 13th end. However six of the last eight ends went in favour of the home side.

Ian Heppenstall had a comfortable win on his rink with S Downer as the opposite number. With the score at 11 - 9 a five boosted the home score which opened a substantial lead and improved even more in the final ends.

Roy Harding scored a six on the 13th end, to boost his close advantage against John Wathes, and held the advantage to the end.

Central had a player short in the final rink which was skipped by Don Goddard against David Fanning, but they managed to win their game after losing a quarter of their score.

Cadoxton continued with their good form in the ML5 match at home to the league leaders, Cyfarthfa Castle.

Howard Craven’s rink again completed a good win. They reached 13 – 2, which included a six and a four, but wavered on this score for four ends, whilst the advantage was reduced. However the good team work returned and they regained supremacy despite a four against, near the end.

The visitors struggled against the rink skipped by John Jones, which allowed home domination for seven ends and reaching a score of 10 - 2. The remaining ends were shared with eight shots scored by both sides, mainly singles.

At the half-way stage, Roy Harding’s rink was trailing by 10 shots to five. Nevertheless they completed another rink win with a strong finish to sneak home by two shots.

Kelvin Chedgzoy skipped a weakened rink in place of the normal one, with three regulars not available. However, they had a good start.

They were level at five each after six ends when they boosted their chances with a five, followed by two singles. Unfortunately the visitors started to get used to the green and scored steadily to end up comfortable winners.

Cadoxton had the difficult task from changing from playing on their heavy green to the fast all-weather green at Rhoose. The vast change did not have a favourable outcome with all four rinks losing.

Don Kuhnell’s rink performed reasonably well but with Tony Lages, the opposing skip making shot continuously for 13 ends, with good bowls, or at times lucky, the visitors trailed 20 – 3. At this stage after a winning end the visitors changed the tactics and the mat was brought well up the green, which changed the game dramatically, but too late to overcome the big deficit for the remaining seven winning ends.

John Jones rink did make a better start, with Ron Ball his opposing skip and trailed by just two shots, 7 – 9 with 11 ends played. However a five against on the next opened a gap which increased in the final stages.

Howard Craven’s rink met the rink skipped by Les Parson and failed to score during the first five ends, when an 11 shot lead was built against them. The remainder of the game was much closer, when the pace was mastered, with 12 shots scored with 14 against.

Roy Harding had a much better opening, and when a 9 – 1 advantage was completed it looked to be the only rink to master the conditions. However a lapse, when two fours and a five were conceded took away the ascendancy.

They were still in with a chance trailing by just two shots but a disastrous final five ends produced 17 shots against including two sixes.

L Willmot, D Shackell, M White, L Parsons 25 - W Craven, D Hammond, I Robertson, H Craven 12

Two recent Munro Cup matches were postponed at Cowbridge due to heavy rain, and at home to Penarth because of the clash with the Wales European Cup semi-final against Portugal.
