ROMILLY Bowls Club resumed their competitive season on Saturday with a home game against newly promoted Llantrisant.

Having qualified for the knock-out stages of the Carruthers Shield, Romilly were now looking forward to a good start in defending the CML first division title won in fine style last season.

On a fine afternoon for bowling, the game commenced with both sides struggling to gain the early initiative but by the fifth end Romilly held a slender one shot advantage 18 – 17. As the game progressed Romilly began to find their form and by the end of the tenth had poached an 18 shot lead with the rinks of Graham Cogbill, Brian Foscolo and Jeff Wright holding advantages with Fred Phillips rink down by four leaving the score ay half-way 46 – 28.

With their confidence now flowing the rink of Gary Eastment, Andrew Hatcher, Mike Doyle and Cogbill had increased their advantage by 21 – 5 at end 15, whilst the rink of

Alan Bryan, Roger Jones, Clive Collins and Wright had cruised into a 24 – 11 lead against a rink skipped by Welsh International Mark Harding.

At the same stage Foscolo’s rink lead by Paul Williams, Terry Bloomfield, Mel Newman were holding a four shot lead but Phillips’s rink was still struggling down by 11 shots. As

the game drew to its conclusion Foscolo’s rink maintained their four shot advantage and Phillips’s rink were still 10 shots behind.

Cogbill’s rink playing superbly ran out easy winners 27 – 10 with Wright’s rink also playing brilliantly, ended up winning 32 – 16. With three winning rinks Romilly took 12 of the 14 points to give them a good start to their league season. Final Score Romilly 96, Llantrisant 64.

This Saturday the league continues with Romilly visiting Senghenydd another newly promoted team.
