BARRY Romilly Bowls Club had a mixed week last week winning two out of their three games.

The three games were a Munro Cup against the Murch at Dinas Powys followed by two games on the Saturday, the A team in a SVLA game at home against Cadoxton A and the Club side away to Llantwit Major in their second group game in the Carruthers Shield.

Having won their first game the previous week Romilly were in a confident mood on their visit to local rivals Llantwit Major for their second Carruthers game but also aware that Llantwit were capable of creating an upset on their own green.

The game began on a fine afternoon with the Llantwit green looking in good condition and running well which is a treat for the Romilly players who have to play on their own green which is constantly heavy. The game began with the score at the fifth end 17-all but between ends six to 10 Romilly knew they had a difficult game on their hands as the home side went into a seven shot lead.

The Romilly rinks of Brian Foscolo, Graham Cogbill and Jeff Wright struggled during this period scoring only four shots between them, fortunately the rink skipped by Fred Phillips scored well taking 11 shots to three. Between ends 11 to 15 Romilly rinks fought hard to reverse the difference which they did, reducing the Llantwit lead to just three.

Wright's rink having won easily the previous week was now struggling losing 6 - 17 to Neville Young's rink whilst Foscolo's and Cogbill's rinks were each four shots behind, fortunately the Romilly rink of Phil Gershenson, Gwynne Rees, Rhodri Phillips and skip Fred Phillips were in fine form and were leading 24 - 8 enabling Romilly to retain a chance of turning the game around.

Over the final six ends Llantwit were not going to lie down as both Foscolo's and Cogbill's rinks clawed their way back but not enough, both losing by 19-21 and 18-19 respectively. Phillips's rink continued their form winning 28-14 but unfortunately Wright's rink continued to struggle against some fine bowling from the home rink eventually losing 8-28 resulting in a disappointing nine shot defeat for Romilly 73 - 82.

The final group games are this Saturday with all sides having lost one game, therefore qualification will come down to shots difference.

Holders Romilly A welcomed Cadoxton A to Romilly Park on Saturday in their third SVLA game already having won their previous two games. Cadoxton turned up with three triple rinks which gave Romilly an immediate advantage which showed in the scores by the fifth end with the advantage already 46-4.

As the game continued the scores increased as expected with the Rom running away with the game and by the tenth end Romilly led by 68 shots 82 - 14. The game continued but the concern now was the threatening weather which turned into a downpour stopping the game at the 15th end with Romilly well ahead 110 - 22.

Romilly gained 14 points but this wasn't any enjoyment for either side so hopefully Cadoxton can get their squad back to full strength and fulfil forthcoming fixtures with four

full rinks.

Romilly travelled the short distance to Dinas Powys to play the Murch in their first Munro Cup game of the season. The game was played over 18 ends on a fine spring evening

with the first five ends going the way of the home team who had an advantage of seven shots, 11 - 18.

It is invariably a close game at the Murch and this game was not going to be an exception, with the game remaining close approaching the 11th end with Romilly now leading by just one shot. By the 15th end Romilly had increased their lead to eight shots with Graham Cogbill's and Roger Jones' rinks enabling this advantage leading by four and five shots respectively.

The final three ends were very closely fought with Romilly scoring 12 shots to the opposition's nine to win by 11 shots 61 - 50. With three winning rinks and Ray Hewitson's rink picking up a four to force a draw giving Romilly 13 points to Murch's one point.

This week's games are home to Sully Sports in the Munro Cup and Saturday's games are Club side against Belle View (Carruthers Shield) and A side versus Central in another

SVLA match.
