ON SATURDAY Barry Athletic Cricket Club's 1st XI travelled to Sully to face Sully Centurions in their opening league game of the newly formed South East Wales Cricket League.

Sully won the toss and decided to bat and the in total only lasted 91 minutes.

Sully were soon up against it as they were bowled out for 35 runs in 15 overs and 57 minutes, John Gee being the main protagonist as he picked up seven for 15 with the wickets of Allsop 12, Pavel zero, Thomas six, Prashant first ball LBW zero, Bhart one, Ganesh zero and Cuddahey zero, at the other end Jake Griffett was menacing with his left arm pace and he picked up the wickets of Capper zero, Sandeep zero, and Santos four as he finished with three for 20.

Barry openers David Goodway and Nathan Baker did not take long to knock the runs off as they took the score to 39 for zero and a 10 wicket win with Goodway 16 not out and Baker 14 not out and a sum total of 20 overs and 91 minutes for the whole game and a 20 point win.

At the clubhouse after the game Peter Hellyar was awarded a commemorative cap for his 30 consecutive years in the 1st XI.

On Sunday, Barry travelled to Malpas for a Welsh Cup game, lost the toss and were asked to bat first in a reduced game of 30 overs and got off to a rapid start as openers Goodway and Baker had 48 on the board before Baker was caught behind for 35 including two fours and three sixes.

Goodway went for 18 with the score 82, two wickets then fell on 143 White for 11 and Rhett Jones for a fine 62. The fifth wicket fell at 146 when Ellis went for 13, it was 172 for six when Griffett was out for 13, Nicky Jones then followed for six on 189, before Dawson was run out for a fine 27, the score was now 215 for nine, Frost was the last man out for three as Barry finished 218 all out.

In reply Malpas were always up with the run rate as they were 109 for two in the 16th over, then cometh the hour cometh the man, or men, as Goodway five for 26 and Frost three for 15 bowled Malpas out for 200 and a fine 18 run win, Ward 43, Morgan 41, Francis 36 and Martin 35 were the main scorers for Malpas.

This week Barry Athletic 1st XI entertain Ebbw Vale at The Island Ground with a 12.30pm start. The 2nd XI travel to Whitchurch Heath with a 1pm start.
