Barry RFC 41 - Gwernyfed 0

BARRY RFC got the show back on the road with a comprehensive victory over visitors Gwernyfed last Saturday, a result which moves them to fourth in the table.

Early exchanges gave the visitors the advantage as they sought to keep the game open with a series of attacks that demanded a solid defence from the home side.

But it was Barry who had the first chance to open the scoring with a penalty that sailed just wide, quickly followed by a second chance which was converted by Barros to earn an early lead.

The game was lacking scoring opportunities with both defences on top until a break from a lineout by Scott was fed to Perry who found W Jones on his inside to split the defence and race in from some 50 metres to score for a good try with the boot of Barros adding the extras for a 10 point lead.

The visitors maintained their tactics of keeping the game open and with their scrum causing the Barry eight some problems, were asking serious questions of the Barry defence but were hindered in their lack of a cutting edge from their back line.

Finally Barry broke out of this cycle with breaks of their own which threatened, only to be wasted due to the final pass going astray.

Barry were not to be denied a lineout drive ended just short but was recycled and spread wide to find Oaten in space to cross wide out. With the conversion missed the score moved to 15-0 as half-time arrived.

On the restart with Barry now playing with the slope the visitors were forced onto the defensive as a mixture of clever tactical kicking and good inter-passing saw them struggle and concede penalties in their 22.

Unable to drive over, Barry took a line-out and good swift handling saw Adams cross for a try which was converted by Scott for a 22-0 lead.

As hard as they tried the visitors were unable to hold Barry at this stage and further scores looked inevitable.

Williams and White had come on for injured Hadfield and Barros as another break from Scott together with clever slight of hand confused the visitors with the pass finding W Jones to cross for his second try of the afternoon, converted by Scott to take the score to 29-0.

Barry were totally in control at this stage and only brave defence kept the visitors line intact.

Further substitutions saw O'Sullivan, Such and Ryan enter the fray as Barry attacked at every opportunity.

The visitors to their credit still tried to attack on the rare occasion and a line-out drive saw them nearly cross the line only to concede a penalty.

A loose ball found Barry on the attack again with Adams unlucky not to score, the ball was moved quickly to find space for Ryan to cross with Scott again successful with the conversion.

Straight from the kick off Barry went on the attack which again saw Adams nearly through, but Barry kept possession for White to cross for the last try of the game which went unconverted for a final score of 41-0.

After the disappointment of the previous two games it was good to see Barry get that out of their system and return to something like their best as while the score may not reflect it they were made to work hard for this result against a durable Gwernyfed side who never made it easy.

The next home fixture is May 7 for a local derby against Dinas Powys and they end the season away at Club Rygbi on May 11 and their final game at home to promotion favourites Dowlais.

On the broader rugby front, the club are delighted to announce that the coaching team of John Bryant, Liam Scott and Rhydian Scott are to remain in place for next season, a decision surely welcomed by players and supporters alike.
