A BARRY junior netball club has been the first in South Wales to be awarded the insport ribbon award.

Coaches at the Red Dragon Junior Netball Club has made a commitment to make the activities they run suitable for disabled people and are always on the lookout for new members to join their sessions.

The club met the criteria for the award with ease due to their excellent coach to player ratio, number of qualified coaches, and number of trained first aiders.

Simon Jones, Disability Sport Wales development officer for the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said, “Netball is a great team sport for anyone to play and one through which children can learn skills that will stay with them for life.

“I want to give credit to the coaches and volunteers at Red Dragon Junior Netball Club. It was they who first approached the Council for advice on developing a more inclusive club as they could see how easily netball could be adapted to suit a larger range of participants.

“Having a ‘can do’ attitude is essential when it comes to inclusion as this opens the door to a new range of members who may not have had the opportunity to play netball before. The club deserve every success.”

Red Dragon’s training sessions take place every Sunday at Cadoxton Primary School Sports Hall in Barry from 3pm to 5pm. There are separate sessions for different age groups ranging from 5 – 14 year olds.
