BARRY Romilly Bowling Club held their Finals day over the weekend with the Ladies and Men’s Competitions played out in good conditions despite the threat of adverse weather conditions.

On Saturday morning the games included the Ladies Novices, the Men’s Mottram Cup and both Ladies and Men’s rinks. The Mottram Cup was fought between Jeff Coles and Dave Noble, unfortunately Noble was up against an inspired Coles who took the first end and went on to win comfortably.

The Ladies Novice event was a game between two keen bowlers Lynne Lafford and Gaynor Taylor with the game being close throughout. Taylor took the lead early on but Lafford pulled back the deficit to lead 9 – 7 at the tenth end but Taylor fought back and went ahead 14 –12 by the 15th.

At the 20th end the game was all square 16 – 16 and nerves were evident as Lafford took the lead on the 21st end scoring a two to lead 18 – 16 but back came Taylor who took control taking the next four ends scoring a one, two, one, one to win an exciting game 21 – 18.

Both rinks games turned out to be closely fought with the ladies match being played over an agreed 10 ends and was won by the rink of Faye Woolcock, Anne Johnson, Marilyn Werner and Norma Goodrich beating the rink of Ann Haines, Angela Hort, Judy Davies and Myra Newman by a single shot on the last end 8 – 7.

The Men’s rinks Final played over 21 ends was won by the rink of Colin Davies, Terry Bloomfield, Brian Cheal and Mike Doyle who beat the rink of Des Bannister, Alf Woolcock, Rhys Phillips and Roger Jones by 23 – 21.

The two wood Competitions were played over 21 ends although this number wasn’t required as Beryl Holmes beat Marilyn Werner 17 – 4 and Jeff Wright beat Mel Newman 16 – 9.

On Saturday afternoon both handicap games were played along with the Men’s Tim Evan’s Trophy. The Men’s handicap was played off scratch between Jeff Wright and Mel Newman with Wright coming out on top, the Ladies handicap was between Myra Newman and Rita Jones with Myra winning comfortably.

The Tim Evan’s was played between Jeff Coles and Mike Gronow with Coles, who has qualified for four finals altogether, winning comfortably.

Sunday Morning saw both four wood Pairs being played between the Ladies with Gaynor Taylor/Myra Newman and Angela Hort/Jan Noble with Taylor and Newman winning comfortably by 29 – 12.

The Men’s final was played between father and son with Rhys Phillips partnered by Gwyn Rees getting the better of his father Fred Phillips and Jeff Coles 15 – 29.

The afternoon session was due to contain both Championship Finals and The Men’s Triples unfortunately the men’s game between Phil Gershenson and Jeff Wright had to be postponed due to illness. The Men’s Triples went ahead between Jeff Coles, Des Bannister and Paul Clarke who outplayed the Triple of Colin Davies, Mike Gronow and Rhys Phillips.

The Ladies Championship being played between Beryl Holmes and Myra Newman was eagerly awaited by the spectators and they weren’t let down as the bowling was of high quality. Holmes took the early advantage and held the lead 16 – 5 but everyone is aware of Newman’s fighting qualities who fought her way back into the game 18 – 13 and then 20 –15 but Holmes ran out the winner 21 – 15 in an exciting game.
