ON SATURDAY Barry Athletic Cricket Club 1st XI travelled to Newport Fugitives on a bright sunny afternoon where they lost the toss and were asked to bat first on a green wicket.

They were soon in trouble when they lost the wicket of Ellis for six with only 12 runs on the board, this brought Rhett Jones to the wicket and he was to produce an innings of maturity and sensibility as he added 60 for the second wicket with Paul Murphy who scored 24 before he was caught by Richard Jones off the bowling of Wilcox with the score on 72.

Captain Goodway came to the wicket to join Jones and they went on to added 104 runs for the third wicket as Jones passed 50 for the second week in a row, before Goodway was LBW to Ahmed for 39 with the score 176.

Nicky Jones then came and went for none with the score also on 176 again Ahmed caught Wilcox, Lewis Doel was then bowled for none and Brock run out for four and the score now 186 for six, but Rhett Jones was still there as he passed his 100 and took Barry to a score of 198 for six from their 50 overs.

In reply the Fugitives opening batsmen started well and took the Barry bowling apart with Frost taking the brunt of it and when the thunderstorm came at the end of the 13th over The Fugitives were 99 for none.

With the rain falling and Newport desperate to get back out to finish the game, the umpires decided after an hour and 10 minutes of rain to go back out and finish the game with the outfield very wet and very slippery.

But Barry went on and played and got the wickets of Jones for 62 bowled Goodway, Bridges 64 caught Murphy bowled Goodway and Wilcox caught Doel bowled Usswald for none as The Fugitives went on to achieve their revised target of 155 and won by seven wickets.

At the Island, Barry Athletic 2nds XI entertained Newport Fugitives 2nd XI. Barry batted first and were soon in trouble as they were reduced to 60 for six and at the end of their 45 overs they had reached 122 for nine with Dawson 27, Griffett 18, M Baker 14, S Phillips 14, P Hales three for 33 and S Durston two for 13.

Newport Fugitives in reply had reached 71 for four before a thunderstorm and downpour came in and ended the game with Griffett two for 24 and S Phillips two for 22.
