THE Brynhill Golf Club Ladies Championship 2015 was played in cold, wet and blustery conditions, many of the ladies followed in buggies with a dozen stalwarts, including the president, Keith Atkinson, and his wife, Brenda, walking.

Sam Pascoe was first to drive off, and in difficult conditions, Gemma was three up on the ninth. On the tenth Gemma Evans drove her ball into the ditch, and unable to find it, reduced her lead to two.

Sam landed many of her drives on the green on the par three's, but also found some bunkers and trees, so Gemma was two up on the 18th.

The weather brightened a little in the afternoon and Gemma was five up after the ninth. She drove into the ditch again on the tenth, although this time the ball was found.

Sam battled on and reduced Gemma's lead to three up on the 15th. Sam won the 16th with a par to stay in the game. She won the 17th and 18th, so all square on the 18th and sudden death had to be played.

On the 37th hole, Sam hit a shot into the ditch, although Gemma found the sand, she chipped out well and won the match.

Jan said: "The championship match was a delight to referee, it was so exciting to see Sam fight back from six down to all square on the 36th hole. Then Gemma, who had led from the start, to win on the 37th hole. All played fairly in the spirit of our wonderful game of golf."

The Diak was also played in the afternoon between Julie Harkin and Shirley O'Donovan, who last played in this Bronze Championship 47 years ago. Shirley has been in the championship finals 23 times, and won 12 of them, and at over 80, is the oldest player to take part in the Diak.

Although Shirley played a cracking shot from the trees on the second, Julie had a wonderful drive on the third, and took the lead of three up on the third.

Shirley played back steadily until the match was all square on the ninth. On the 11th, Shirley's third shot flew into the pond, giving Julie the lead again and keeping it going to be two up on the 15th.

On the 16th they both drove the green but Shirley won it to go just one down. On the 17th, Julie was through the green and Shirley just off, and the hole halved. On the 18th tee Julie was still one up, but Shirley's fourth shot found the bunker, and although she hit it out eventually and sunk the putt, Julie was already on the green and won the match.

Audrey said, "It was a pleasure to referee a match which was played with such friendliness and sportsmanship."

Despite the wind and showers all finalists played wonderful golf which was enjoyed by their many supporters. A dinner and presentation was held in the clubhouse in the evening, with the competitors giving entertaining speeches.

Robbie Lee won the GUW Silver Challenge Bowl 2015 at Builth Wells, aided by her caddie, Olwen Thomas. Lady golfers from all over Wales take part in this competition, so congratulations to Robbie, who is the first Brynhill player to win this coveted award.
