ON Saturday Barry Athletic Cricket Club entertained Ponthir, in a vital must win game under new captain David Goodway who lost the toss and was asked to bowl first on a glorious afternoon at The Athletic Ground, Barry Island.

It was former captain John Gee who took the first wicket when he had Davies LBW with the score on seven, the score had reached 11 when Detteridge was caught by Murphy off the bowling of Frost for four.

The third wicket fell with the score on 36 when Burkitt was caught by Rhett Jones off the bowling of Gee. Gee, then six runs later, took the wicket of Norman fantastically caught in the covers one handed by Andre Buckland for 10.

Jake Griffett then got in on the act as he picked up the wickets of Dunnehay and Harold caught Baker and Jones respectively, both in the 28th over with the score on 88.

It then became 88 for seven when Peter Hellyar had Mark Crook LBW for none and three wickets had fallen for no runs in 11 balls.

It then became the Billy Usswald show as he picked up the wickets of Evans caught by Buckland for two, Jarvis bowled for none and A Burkitt who was caught by the diving Peter Hellyar at mid on for a fine 55 and Ponthir were all out for 126 in the 40th over and Billy Usswald finishing with three for eight, Gee three for 31 and Griffett two for 33.

In reply Barry got off to a fast start as Paul Murphy and Nathan Baker put on 43 in six overs before Baker trying to play one shot too many and was caught at long off for 33 in 18 balls with five fours and one six off the bowling of Crook.

This brought Rhett Jones to the wicket to join Murphy and they added 16 before Murphy was caught off the bowling of Evans for 17.

New father Jones was then joined by new captain Goodway as they added 43 in eight overs as Barry neared their target of 127 before Jones was out caught for 30 in 31 balls including five fours and one six of the bowling of Evans.

Andrew Buckland then joined Goodway as they proceeded to take Barry to the target and they reached it when Buckland hit the winning runs was a cover drive for four, this left Buckland nine not out, with Goodway finishing 33 not out and a Barry win under the new tenure on captain Goodway.

Barry Athletic's 2nd XI travelled to Ponthir and produced another win on their title charge as they reached 243 for eight in their 45 overs with Henry Dawson with a fine 46 being the main stay of the innings, the other main contributors were Damon Leake 33, Hugh Smith 26 and 16 by Simon Phillips.

In reply Ponthir were all out for 192 with only Adams 50, Denney 27, and Waterhouse 25, being the main scorers for Ponthir. With Ashley Baker five for 23 and Steve Oram two for 38 being the main bowlers for Barry as their march for the title continues under the fine captaincy of Ashley Baker.

This week Barry Athletic 1st XI travel to Rogerstone, while the 2nd XI are at home to the same opponents both games have a 12.30pm start.

On Tuesday's, Barry Athletic hold Junior training from 6pm to 7.30pm.

On Sunday, August 16 junior co-ordinator Mark Ellis and club secretary/1st XI scorer Mark Rees will embark on a sponsored walk with some of the junior section to raise funds for the junior section from The Athletic Ground, Barry Island to The SSE SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff to deliver a signed bat and a commemorative 125th Anniversary Cap to the museum.
