GAVIN Chesterfield will take his Barry Town United football side to Cardiff Metropolitan University on Saturday, August 15, for the curtain-raiser to the 2015-16 Welsh League Division One campaign (2.30pm kick-off).

The Barry manager will be no stranger to the surroundings at Cyncoed Campus, having coached the then-UWIC senior team in the Welsh League between 2002 and 2005.

Adopting the Cardiff Met name with the re-branding of the club's parent university in 2011, the capital club attained Welsh Premier status in 2000 via a merger with multiple-time runners-up Inter Cardiff; only to be relegated later in the year.

Seven straight campaigns in Division One ensued, with a number of meetings with Barry at Cyncoed and Jenner during that time.

Suffering relegation to Division Two in 2008, UWIC dropped to Division Three two years later; but would bounce back with consecutive promotions in 2013 and 2014.

Indeed, were it not for a remarkable 5-0 victory for Haverfordwest County at Aberdare Town on the final day of the season, the side from the Cardiff outskirts would have made it three straight promotions at the end of 2014-15.

Denied by the cruellest of final twists, Cardiff Met will now instead provide formidable opposition for the Town, as the 2015-16 Welsh League campaign kicks off this Saturday.

Due to the installation of a new 3G playing surface at Jenner Park, Barry will tackle the first 10 league matches on the road, before returning home on Tuesday, November 10, for the visit of Risca United.

The opening rounds of the League Cup and Welsh Cup will also be played away from Jenner Park.
