JAMES Savory, from Barry, has returned home from the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles with a Silver medal.

During the games there were 7000 athletes from 170 countries competing for medals.

James competed in sprint kayaking at Marine Stadium, the Olympic venue in Long Beach, in temperatures in the high 80s.

His first race of the day was the 500m double which saw James and his partner Stephen Beynon, from Llanelli, win the Silver.

An hour later James had to compete again in the individual 500m, this was a very close and hard fought race with James claiming fifth place.

The following day James competed in the 200m race, he had been placed in the highest division and again in a very close race James achieved a fifth place in a time of 1.30.37.

Head coach Andrew Beynon said that he was proud of all the kayaker's in his squad as they had given their all and were great ambassadors for their sport and country.

James would like to thank everyone that helped him fundraise to make his dream of competing in the World Games come true, especially the customers and staff of Cafe No 5 High Street, Morrisons and BCWAC for the opportunity to train with their project at No1 Barry Dock.
