BARRY Athletic Bowls team travelled to Merthyr West End on Saturday, July 11, for their third league game of the season.

Barry, without a win in their opening two league games, managed to put in a solid team performance to secure a valuable victory and 10 points towards the fight for safety. Barry scraping through by two shots to record a 74-72 win.

The game itself was a very tight affair with all four rink games contested to a high standard. Top rink honours for the Athletic went to Jack Beanland, Phil Killin, Kristian Harris and Martin Clarke-Squires who secured a 17-14 victory over junior international Jonathan Evans.

The other winning rink for Barry Athletic was skipped by the in form Glyn Thomas, who put in another outstanding display of bowls as he guided his quartet to a victory over Huw Davies.

The two remaining Barry Athletic rinks, skipped by Dean Rees and Robert Horgan, each dropped two shots on the final end of their tussles to go down by one shot and two shots respectively.

Rink scores:

J Beanland, P Killin, K Harris and M Clarke 17-14

J Killin, D Jones, C Wright and R Horgan 18-20

D Snelling, G Parr, P Rogers and D Rees 18-19

G Gane, M Jones, G Whittaker and G Thomas 21-19

The Barry Athletic second team, severely weakened by injury and availability issues, lost at home to Merthyr's seconds, picking up three points in the process. A debut rink victory for John McCarthy being one of the few highlights of this game.
