SULLY Centurions Cricket Club made the short journey to Rhoose and came off second best to Welsh Asians on a hot afternoon.

The Rhoose wicket was true to its unpredictable reputation, but Centurions could have no complaints about the result. With no fewer than four second XI regulars in the side due to unavailability and recent departures, Centurions were up against it from the start.

After the opening pair of Santosh Singh and Sandep Shokeen took the score along to 19, Santosh was bowled for 13, which started the collapse. The next two batsmen, Tom Davies and Lloyd Bruce, were both out without troubling the scorers as Sully found themselves 20 for three in no time at all.

Sandeep top scored with 28, but with a total of five ducks the end came when the last wicket fell with the score on just 78. The only other player to get into double figures was Paul Fisher, who was 10 not out at the end.

Inevitably the Welsh Asians’ innings did not last very long, as they reached the target in the tenth over. Lloyd Bruce was the only bowler to have any joy, bowling Aslam for five. However Abid and Naeem looked comfortable, with Abid reaching his 50 at the end.

The 2nd XI hosted Malpas and though they were beaten, were not disgraced, as the mostly young side showed some good touches with the bat and in the field.

Batting first they reached 149 for nine, with Luke Burnett top scoring with 44. Gethin Hicks showed his potential with an unbeaten 30 and openers Ricky Griffett and Dave Sylvester hit 24 and 23 respectively.

Malpas lost just two wickets, reaching the target in the 28th over, with Ross (77 not out) being the pick of the visitors’ batsmen. Ricky Griffett – two for 32 – was the only bowler to take any wickets, but the Centurions’ bowlers gave their all in a losing cause.

Sully Centurions participated in the Glamorgan and Monmouthshire Cricket League's T20 competition last Saturday and came away empty handed, with defeats at the hands of Dinas Powys and Monkswood.

Sully played hosts Dinas Powys in the first match and Owain Sullivan top scored with 35 not out.

However, out of the rest of the side, only Prashant Choudhary (14) and Lloyd Bruce (18) reached double figures and the score of 120 for six was always going to be difficult to defend. Dinas reached the target for the loss of five wickets with three overs to spare. Sandeep Shokeen (two for 30) was Centurions' most successful bowler.

In the second match against Monkswood, Centurions batted first again - making a total of 134 for eight in the 20 overs.

Top batting performance was from Prashant Choudhary, who scored an unbeaten 62. But Monkswood proved to be a strong batting side and reached the target in just 10 overs for no wicket. Monkswood went on to defeat Dinas Powys and will progress to the next round in August.
