WALES won back the Celtic challenge with a record-breaking scoreline recently in Carlow, Ireland.

Welsh national coach and former top ranked professional Anthony Davies, from Barry, was proud of his snooker team who took part. Anthony's son Alfie, 14, is also a part of the team.

Alfie attends Bro Morgannwg school and it was his fourth time in as many years he has represented Wales making his first appearance at age 10. That was bettered this year though with an eight-year-old from Tredegar becoming the youngest ever Welsh International, Liam Davies.

The 12-man team got off to a nervous start, losing the opening session 14-10 but soon showed their class and produced some quality play winning back the annual trophy by 89 frames to 45.

The highest break of the weekend was a 73 from Tyler Rees of Llanelli who won all 12 frames he played.

Wales welcome Ireland next summer and will be looking to hold onto the trophy.

Another Barry boy, Sam Thomas, has just returned from Prague where he represented Wales in the European senior championships, his first step-up from junior level. Sam has been taught by Anthony since the age of 12.

The new Welsh junior kicks off again in September and the age categories are under 14 and under 16. Anyone interested in getting their children to play snooker can either go on the Welsh snooker website or contact Anthony direct antd147@hotmail.co.uk
