A MUCH weakened Sully Centurions’ 1st XI's trip to Pontymister ended in a big defeat, with the table topping home side racking up a total of 357 for five after the allotted 50 overs.

Salman (102) and Adran Gori (61) were top scorers for Pontymister, but all who batted managed to find the boundary with regularity. As the Centurion fielders wilted under the onslaught there were several errors which didn't help the cause.

Santosh and Bharat picked up two wickets each, with Shae Ellis getting another, but Sully were always up against it from the first over.

In response, only Shae Ellis managed a reasonable score as Centurions lost wicket after wicket and when Shae was out for 41, the writing was on the wall. The last wicket fell with the score on 102, after only 18 overs.

The 2nd XI achieved their first win of the season at home to Pontymister, thanks in the main to a marvellous century from Josh Bryan.

The visitors batted first and made a great start, with the openers Brown and Hughes putting on 100 and then another century being added, for the next two wickets, to leave Pontymister in a very strong position at 205 for three.

But some tight bowling from the Centurions attack restricted the score to 236 for six at the end of the 45 overs. Ricky Griffett's two for 56 was the best return, but Gethin Hicks gave another good display, with zero for 25 off eight overs.

In reply, Centurions lost Griffett for eight with the score on 36 and then Peter Thomas was bowled for a very good 41, followed by Nick Jones for two to leave the score at 71 for three. Then Josh Bryan entered the fray and almost single handedly took the fight to the Pontymister attack with a great display of batting - supported well by Mark Burnett (12) and Lewis Pyke (22 not out) to lead Centurions home in the 43rd over - finishing on an unbeaten 107.

On Sunday, Centurions swept aside Ponthir by nearly 200 runs in the first round of the Welsh Cup at Burnham Avenue after a true captain's display from Lloyd Bruce.

Batting first Sully looked in trouble after going from 38 for zero to 47 for three after eight overs. Shae Ellis, who is in a good run of form at present, narrowly missed out on a half century when he was caught for 49 as Centurions found themselves on 103 for five and looking in a rather precarious situation.

However skipper Lloyd Bruce led from the front as he shared productive partnerships with Ben Spear (35) and Owain Sullivan (42) before being bowled by Walker for 84, to help the home side reach a massive 305 for seven after the 40 overs were up.

Santosh Singh bowled Price first ball of the Ponthir innings to get Sully off to a flyer and then had Burkitt caught with the score on just two, to leave the visitors reeling. But a dogged stand of 62 between Adams (55) and Grant (14) gave Ponthir a glimmer of hope before a flurry of wickets took them from 92 for five to 110 all out - Bruce followed his batting heroics with figures of four for 18 as Centurions won in the 24th over. A trip to near neighbours Penarth in the next round is the reward for this victory.
