BARRY Romilly Bowls Club had an excellent week winning the three games played in the Munro Cup, S V L A and Carruthers Shield.

The Carruthers Shield game saw the club side visit nearby Rhoose in their final group match, where a win would take ‘The Rom’ into the first round proper having already beaten Kenfig Hill and Pencoed.

Rhoose play on a carpet green where they have caused upsets in the past and even though there are four divisions between the teams, Romilly players coming from a slow grass green onto a faster surface needed to be on their games to ensure a win. The game began with a number of Romilly players struggling in the early ends as expected, with the windy conditions making it even more difficult.

The rinks of Fred Phillips and Jeff Wright got off to a flying start both leading 9 – 1 after five ends with Mike Doyle’s rink one ahead but Brian Foscolo’s rink down 1 – 10. After 10 ends Rhoose were using their knowledge of their green to full advantage and were just one behind thanks mainly to the Rhoose rink of Ron Ball who picked up 14 shots in the five ends to take a 15 – 9 shot lead.

The score line obviously got to ‘The Rom’s’ players which helped boost their concentration and by the 15th end they had moved into a 22 shot lead. As the game progressed, Romilly took total charge and by the end of the game all rinks were ahead with Romilly winning by 37 shots 104 – 67 and qualifying for the first round proper at home on June 20. Romilly rink scores as follows:

F Phillips 29 v R Ball 25

B Foscolo 24 v L Parsons 17

J Wright 33 v P Williams 12

M Doyle 18 v G Lages 13

Romilly ‘A’ side welcomed The Murch (Dinas Powis) for an S L V A match to Romilly Park hoping to continue their success in this competition. With two skips Tony Freeman and Des Bannister having to play for the club side, one would have thought this would weaken the side but with the return of Kenny Wesgate and new bowlers Roger James and Barrie Griffiths the team showed that they now have strength in depth.

One rink in particular showed how well these players fitted in as skip Howard Jones ably supported by Clive Tapscott, Roger James and Ken Wesgate had a high scoring win of 32 – 10. Other rinks skipped by Bob Wyatt, Brian Cheal and Alfie Woolcock also had comfortable wins helping Romilly to a 46 shot victory 96 – 50.

Rink scores:

A Woolcock 20 v T Mayor 13

H D Jones 32 v C Garland 10

B Cheal 21 v B Toozar 12

R Wyatt 23 v R Peel 15

In the Munro Cup Romilly travelled to Sully to play B P and came away with full points winning on all rinks.
