ON Saturday Barry Romilly 1st Team welcomed Pencoed Bowls Club to Romilly Park in another Carruthers Shield Cup Match, hoping to turn the tables on the side that beat them by one shot last year.

Following their win the previous week against Kenfig Hill the ‘Rom’ were looking to improve on their performance from that game especially on their own green.

On a breezy but sunny day which was a total transformation from the previous Saturday, Romilly began the game confidently but it was clear over the first five ends it was not going to be an easy afternoon as Pencoed matched the ‘Rom’ bowl for bowl with the score level at nine all.

The next five ends were similar to the initial five but Romilly had taken a narrow lead of three shots by the tenth end leading 35–32.

Both sets of players were struggling to find line and length on a green renowned for being heavy and were left scratching their heads at some of the lines the woods were taking. The game remained close but during ends 11 to 15 Romilly began to exert pressure on their opponents and went further ahead thanks mainly to the rinks of Foscolo and Cogbill who had forged clear by eight and six shots respectively helping to put Romilly ahead by 15 shots

56 - 41.

The rinks of Phillips and Wright were also playing their part being two ahead and just one behind respectively but both rinks played well over the last six ends to end up winning and supporting the rinks of Foscolo and Cogbill for an overall victory by 19 shots 75–56.

Rink scores:

K Mills, T Bloomfield, C Collins and F Phillips 17 – 13

P Gershenson, P Williams, G Trepleton and J Wright 17 – 15

G Eastment, R Hewitson, M Doyle and G Cogbill 19 – 11

J Coles, G Rees, R Jones and B Foscolo 22 – 17

The next game is on Saturday at 2.30pm and is the final Carruthers Shield group game away to Rhoose where a Romilly victory will guarantee a place in the open draw. Romilly ‘A’ have an SVLA game at home to the Murch.
