ON Saturday, May 9, the girls football team from Ysgol Sant Curig in Barry travelled to Aberystwyth to represent Cardiff & Vale schools in the finals of a national football tournament.
The tournament consisted of teams from each county in Wales, for a day of competitive football in Aberystwyth and organised by the Urdd.
The girls from Years 5 and 6 at the school had beaten seven other teams in the tournament at the Welsh Institute of Sport in February, and were therefore eligible to represent Cardiff & the Vale of Glamorgan schools in the competition.
Leaving their school in Barry at 6am on Saturday, they all travelled in a minibus for three hours to get to the tournament, and put in a great performance to win matches against girls’ teams from across Wales.
Teacher and team coach Amy Withey said: “The girls worked really hard to reach the national finals, and having been playing against the boys’ team in school to get ready for this event. They all played really well on the day, and we should all be very proud of their achievements in representing both the school and the county."
The football kit was sponsored by Nina Estate Agents in Barry as part of their support for local teams.
