THE Cadoxton season started with a mid-week friendly at Windsor, Penarth on Thursday, April 30.

Paul Swannick captained his first match, with a win on a closely matched rink.

A ‘4’ for the visitors brought the scores level, on the fifth end, but the home side regained an advantage of 13 -6.

This difference was gradually whittled away making the scores level once again at 14-14.

The scores were still level with two ends left, which were won with two singles with Paul moving the jack on the last end for the vital shot.

Phil Ellis skipped his rink to a narrow one shot success. A four shot advantage was held by his rink with four ends left.

Three of these brought success to the home side, to bring the scores level, another last end single ensured the victory.

Arthur Field and Ray Morris found it hard going in the early stages and it was left to skip Don Kuhnell to contain the deficit to just singles.

However the difference changed dramatically when Arthur and Ray drew four perfect bowls, on the 13th end.

The home side were unable to score again, with Dennis Hammond also giving good support, until a consolation single for the home side, on the last.

Derek Brook found stiff opposition on his rink with the home side failing to score on just three ends.

The availability of players for Cadoxton’s first competitive matches on Saturday was very limited and the ‘A’ side fixture had to be cancelled.

The First team hosted a ‘Carruthers’ game against a young side from Caerau.

They are well known for the coaching of juniors. Although they were two players short and conceding a quarter of their shots on two rinks they were too strong for the makeshift team that Cadoxton were able to field.

Miky Banks, the coach for this young team skipped against Don Kuhnell’s rink, with two of the boys making a triple. They had an excellent game, but with Jim Stacey playing superb lead bowls they were always chasing the game and in a close game the home team eventually drew away in the closing stages.

Howard Craven picked up four shots during the first three ends, but this score wasn’t improved until two ‘4’s brought them briefly back into the game on the 12th and 13th. Four more were added with 6 against during the closing ends.

Gordon Davies skipped a rink against Mikey Brain one of their star Juniors, and confessed they were much to good for them. The visitors took a 11-0 lead after three ends, this was reduced by four during the next three, but the remainder of the scoring mainly went against.

Roy Harding had Alex Brain in opposition and didn’t get much joy, scoring just six singles in their defeat. Hopefully a stronger side can be selected for future games, when more members become available.
