THE Vale of Glamorgan Association Football League started the end of season finals on Friday, April 8, with the Dockers Cup.

The Division 2 League Cup final saw Barry Belgrade FC take on Vale United FC. After letting in the first goal, Barry Belgrade came back with three unanswered goals to take the trophy. Final score Barry Belgrade 3 – 1 Vale United FC.

On Sunday, April 10, Division 1 took centre stage with Tynewydd FC playing VIFC. Starting the match as favourites were VIFC as the league leaders. Two Jordan Mortimer goals in the second half were thought to guarantee putting their hands on the cup. But a late surge by Tynewydd FC saw Dale Miller pull one back.

With seconds remaining a heavy tackle from Gareth Union saw a red card being issued leaving Tynewydd FC with 10 men; but the whistle went soon after. Final score Tynewydd FC 1 – 2 VIFC.

The junior section started their finals on Thursday, April 16 with the Year 11 Cup; the Classic Sportswear Trophy. Holton Road FC took on Sully Sports Reds in a very close match; so close that after 80 minutes plus 20 minutes extra time, the score remained 0-0. This meant the match was to be decided on penalties.

Sully Sports started and scored two and missed their third but scored their fourth. Holton Road got their first three in and had their fourth saved. The fifth penalty for each were both scored; even a re-taken Holton Road one was taken and saved before the referee blew his whistle.

Sudden death then saw Sully Sports have their sixth penalty saved and Holton Road then scored to lift the Classic Sportswear Trophy. Final Score Holton Road FC 0-0 Sully Sports Reds; Holton Road FC win 5-4 on Penalties.

The following night, Barry Town United FC took on Sully Sports Blues in the Year 7 final for the Brian Riseborough Cup. Three goals from Louis, Harding, Macauley Marks and Cian Anderson were enough to see Barry Town United win the trophy. Final Score Barry Town United FC 3-0 Sully Sports Blues.

Lastly on Sunday, April 19, in the morning the Harry Gratton Trophy was up for grabs in the Year 9 final between Barry Town United FC and Cogan Coronation FC.

A close game saw the game decided in the first half. A goal by Brooklyn McCabe saw Barry Town United FC take the lead but Cogan replied before half-time with goals from Luke Warcow and Arron Archer. Early in the second half, Barry Town United FC saw their goalkeeper sent off but no further goals were scored. Final Score Barry Town United FC 1-2 Cogan Coronation.

The last Senior League Cup took place in the afternoon with Cardiff Airport FC taking on Cowbrdige Town FC in the ASRS Cup; a replay of last year’s Barry Cup Final.

However, this year saw Cardiff Airport manage to gain a measure of revenge. Jermaine Martin scoring two first half goals to give Cardiff Airport FC the lead by half-time and a third goal – in the form of an own goal - followed in the second to secure the ASRS Cup for Cardiff Airport FC. Final Score Cardiff Airport 3-0 Cowbridge Town FC.

The finals continue this week with Cogan Coronation playing Sully Sports Reds in the Year 8 Cup Final on Friday. April 24. Kickoff is 6.15pm. Then Sunday sees the Year 10 final between Holton Road FC and Sully Sports FC at 10.15am before the final; The Barry Cup between Vale United FC and VIFC; kick off 2.15pm.
