South Wales Senior League Division Two

Tongwynlais 0 Cadoxton Barry 6

Thompson 2, Adams 2, Oaten, Steel

ALREADY assured of the league title, Cadoxton Barry started at a furious pace and the game was just two minutes old when Oaten scored with a looping shot from way out on the right.

With Ton struggling to get into the game it took only a further two minutes for CB to double their lead when a run from the right into the box by Rhodri Morgan saw him execute the perfect cross to find Thompson for a second quality strike.

CB continued to press, though Ton were now starting to display a bit of resistance and it took until the 25th minute for CB to get a third goal. Again it was Thompson who hooked home after a long throw in from Morgan found its way to him.

As with the first two goals, CB's fourth came close on the heels of the third. In fact, it was just one minute later when Morgan was involved yet again, dancing past an amazing seven challenges before cutting back to his left where Adams was on hand to bury the ball into the top right of the net with a blistering shot from middle distance.

Ton gained their first corner on the 30 minute mark and began to create a few half chances of their own, though they were all well dealt with by Harker, in goal, plus Beattie, Walsh, Curran and Baker.

The second half started with a long diagonal pass from Dawson to Morgan. Morgan's cross looked destined to be converted, but a great diving interception from the 'keeper ensured that CB weren't going to score on this occasion.

Although CB continued to ask all the questions, Tongwynlais were now defending much more resolutely and CB had to concede more possession than they had throughout the whole of the first half. Enter Barnet and Steel for Baker and Thompson.

Making more of their possession, Ton won a corner, but a long clearance saw Adams chasing for all his worth to catch it. The odds looked against him, but an outstretched leg managed to toe poke it forward and beyond the incoming defender. Two further paces took the ball into the box from where he scored with a blistering rising shot into the top right corner.

Despite this fifth goal, Ton continued to ask a few questions of CB, but in the 80th minute a foul on Morgan saw him take the free kick himself to find Dawson who moved it out to Steel, out on the right. He cut in a pace to blast home with yet another quality rising shot.

Many sides might have wilted, but not Ton, battling on bravely to ensure that the score was clipped at six and at the final whistle, although the defeat condemned them to parks football next season, they very sporting stayed on to give CB a rousing cheer for their achievement in winning the SWSL Division Two title.

Cadoxton Barry FC wish Tongwynlais well for next season and look for their speedy return to the new South Wales Football Alliance, whose middle division of three will be home to CB.

The Championship Shield had been presented to team captain Ross Weekley in the presence of manager Adam Harvey and assistant manager Chris Barnet, prior to the kick off by retiring league secretary, Will Davies - a gentleman who has given stalwart and dedicated service to the league for more than a quarter of a century. However, the individual trophies were presented after the match to the players by club president, Cllr Dr Ian Johnson.

With the champagne fizzing and the sun blazing down, all of Cadoxton Barry's Second Team, fresh from the victory over Sully Seconds on the adjacent pitch, came over to join in the celebrations and the post match photo call.

Sully Sports 2nds 3 Cadoxton Barry 2nds 4

Rhys Hopkins, Angove, Christopherato, Fiddler (G)

Although Sully's 1sts were losing away to Pontlottyn, a number of the Sully 2nds players fielded for this match had a good amount of South Wales Senior League Division One experience behind them. So this win by Cadoxton Barry's regular 2nds represents quite an achievement.

CB's first goal came from a free kick on the left which was volleyed home by Rhys Hopkins. Sully pulled one back before Christopherato dummied his man to fire home. The third goal came when Angove headed home from a corner and when Fiddler headed home the rebound after Christopherato had hit the bar CB seemed to be cruising.

But all credit to Sully as they rallied well to pull it back to just the single goal defeat by the final whistle.
