ON Saturday, Barry Athletic Cricket Club opened their historic 125th anniversary season with a resounding win over local rivals Dinas Powys. Barry won the toss and captain David Goodway asked the visitors to bat first on a green lush wicket at The Athletic Ground on a breezy sunny afternoon.

Dinas Powys openers Hannah and Piddock got off to a solid start and put on 49 for the first wicket before Piddock was run out by wicketkeeper Reji for 29. Hannah went on to score a fine 50 in 62 balls before he became one of Goodway’s three wickets in one over for 67, the score 81.

Two balls later Mitchel was caught by Usswald for zero and the very next ball Preston was leg before wicket (LBW) for zero, the score now 81 for four and three wickets falling in four ball.

Tucker went with the score 115 caught Dawson off the bowling of Usswald. Dimoro was next to go bowled Usswald for 28, Doel then picked up the wickets of Mosley caught by Baker 18 and Storey bowled for three. Dinas Powys finishing on 156 for eight off their 40 overs with Goodway three for 34, Usswald two for 25 and Doel two for 26.

In reply Barry were soon six for one when they lost the wicket of Jones for zero caught off the bowling of Ali, there was then a partnership of 35 before Dawson was bowled for 18 with the score on 41.

This brought Baker to the wicket and he was showing some fine form with some majestic shots square of the wicket as he added 89 with Brock who had come to the wicket after the fall of Goodway for 30. Baker then retired hurt with a fine 74 off 67 ball with 12 fours, Griffett came and went before Reji and Brock saw the home side to their score of 157 for four and a six wicket win for the home side, with Brock not out 23 including his first six for the club.
