Railway Wanderers 3 Barry Saints 4

BARRY Saints brushed aside Railway Wanderers in the Divisional Cup but needed extra time to do so.

Saints took the lead early after striker Darren Townsend beat the offside trap, rounded the ‘keeper and slotted the ball into the empty net. Railway equalised after a counter attack soaking up Saints attacks and an early cross found the Railway winger to side-foot home.

Barry rightfully took the lead again when David A Evans headed the ball home after a goal mouth scramble from a corner. It was half-time and the Saints were deservedly in the league.

When the second half began Barry Saints came flying out of the blocks. Darren Townsend added his second, scoring a half volley from just inside the area.

Saints then fell asleep and allowed the Railway back into the game. A ball played down the line to the winger who crossed across the goal for an easy tap in.

Railway earned a corner moments later and with Saints failing to clear their lines a deflected shot fell to the Railway striker to sweep home.

With 15 minutes to go the Railway were reduced to 10 men after the midfielder verbally abused the referee. Saints pushed for the winner and were awarded a penalty.

Michael Evans stepped up but his spot kick was saved. Railways ‘keeper proceeded to waste as much time as he could as it was clear they were looking for the shoot out.

At full time the score was 3-3.

The first half of extra time flew by with both teams barely having chances on goal. During the second half of extra time it was all Saints and after dominating the game they grabbed the winning goal after a sweeping move.

The ball fell to Nathan Williams who played a high ball around the corner to Townsend. The ‘keeper came rushing out but Townsend headed the ball past the stranded ‘keeper to send the Saints into the semi finals.
