South Wales Senior League Division Two

Tongwynlais 0 Cadoxton Barry FC 2 (Adams, Weekley)

CADOXTON Barry pressed from the outset, creating and squandering enough chances to have had the game wrapped up inside the first 20 minutes. But the taking of a series of wrong options saw them only a goal to the good at the end of that spell.

It started with a long ball forward from Baker that came to earth perfectly for Adams to run on to. He carried it a further five yards before firing home with a quality drive from just beyond the box.

Assisted by a strong breeze that sprung up, Tongwynlais started seeing a lot more of the ball without really looking like scoring, Baker, Curran, Beattie and Scott Williams keeping their forwards well in check. Cadoxton Barry continued to create without converting the better chances on the break.

A Curran header was pushed up by the 'keeper to smite the underside of the bar before the ball was eventually cleared. In Ton's one real chance a free kick from the left saw a fine header at the far post go marginally wide. But the frustration of the CB players was visible on their faces as half-time arrived with the game not yet secured.

However, firm but encouraging half-time words from manager Adam Harvey and assistant, Chris Barnet, made all the difference in the second half as, with the breeze now at their backs, CB laid on a master class in possession football. Even though it only yielded one further goal, it was a treat to watch.

Some would argue that it should have been two as, just five minutes in, Oaten, from deep inside his lines, ran on to a high ball out of defence to find the net. Where the offside infringement happened, few were able to guess but it was ruled out.

Then Oaten took a free kick from just outside the box to find Beattie whose header went only just over the bar. It wasn't long before the outcome began to look assured when, in the 65th minute Oaten found Williams who moved the ball on to Thompson. He fed a low cross over to his left where weekly was perfectly placed to finish with a goal that matched the quality of the passing move that led up to it.

Now 95 per cent of the action was happening in the Ton half, but they did break out on one occasion to fire in a shot that wasn't far wide of the CB left post. Other than that, the onslaught at the other end continued.

The join was seamless as Sam Williams, Matthews and Barnet joined the fray, but though the pressure was on right up to the final whistle, there were no further goals to be had.

Special plaudits must go to the Tongwynlais rear guard for holding out so well. There are not many sides in the division that would have held out for so long under such relentless pressure.

With Cogan Coronation only managing a 2 - 2 draw at Cefn Cribbwr, only a miracle can now prevent Cadoxton Barry from winning the last ever South Wales Senior League Division Two Championship.

They can make it a mathematical certainty by picking up the points from their penultimate game of the season on Saturday, March 28. On that day the visitors to Bryn-Y-Don will be St Albans, a Cardiff side that was still in the title hunt until just a couple of weeks back.

This won't be an easy game for Cadoxton Barry. The kickoff is at 2pm and it is hoped that, subject to all being well, the trophy might be presented at the end of the game.

Vale of Glamorgan League Division One

Barry Albion 1 Cadoxton Barry 2nds 4 (Christopherato, Angove, Fiddler (G), Rhydian Hopkins)

Christopherato opened the scoring with a free kick from just beyond the box. Then a cross from the right set Angove up to score from a volley just outside the box.

The third goal arrived when a deep cross missed all but Fiddler out to the right. His unconventional scissor kicked pass found Taylor to convert with a quality header at the far post.

Albion pulled one back with a header from a corner before Rhydian Hopkins made it four. Having beaten the 'keeper to a 50/50 ball, he turned and chipped over the incoming centre half from the acutest of angles. Special credit goes to Eastman and Angove who worked their socks off in defence.

Dockers' Cup Semi-Final

Barry Belgrade 5 Cadoxton Barry 3rds 0

With players unavailable due to a funeral and veteran International Duty - Bobbet and Averies were in the Wales squads that played England at Ystrad Mynach - CB 3rds just managed to field a bare 11.

Even so, against the unbeaten Belgrade, they managed to make a fist of things during a first half in which Phillips and Davies were outstanding in defence - limiting the opposition to a single goal half-time lead.

However, Belgrade did run away with things in the second half, finally going through by five goals to nil. CB wishes Belgrade all the best for the final.
