SULLY Sports 4 - 3 Cornelly United

South Wales Senior League Bruty Cup Round 2

A morning inspection declared the Meadow Street pitch to be fit to play. The players found the pitch to be fairly good if a little slippery under foot.

The Sully team again was much changed after last week’s win over Tonyrefail and with keeper Sharratt, Harding, Jones and Hanlon unavailable due to work and captain Lewis not starting, the team had a strange look to it.

After the heavy league defeat suffered by Sully some three weeks earlier, a full strength Cornelly started against the cup holders showing a very physical attitude with tackles.

Top scorer Long was the victim of a heavy tackle but showed his metal by lobbing the keeper from 25 yards out as Sully broke quickly to give Sully the lead.

The home team immediately hit back to equalise but after a series of corners from Sully a perfectly flighted cross was firmly met by Dan Lawlor whose header hit the back of the net.

Cornelly again came back and Sports conceded a silly penalty, which was scored to make a half time score of 2-2.

Cornelly were strong in the air and their lofty striker was given room to place his header wide of young Sol Borde in the Sports goal.

The physical approach by the home team again emerged with a tackle on winger Chris Rees resulting in a straight red which probably cost them the game. As then they decided to defend their lead but were constantly out played by some good Sully football.

A fine run from Rees saw him fouled in the box and the normally deadly Long put his spot kick to near the keeper and the ball was cleared. But Long was not to be denied as he beat two defenders and crossed for that man Hemmens to side foot into the net.

Sully now went for the win and a great run and shot from Rees was only parried by the keeper and Hemmens was first to the loose ball and shot into the net.

With Lewis and Co controlling the midfield Sully were able to play possession football for the remainder of the game with another youth product Sam White just not able to connect to a loose ball and Sports had gained a very good victory at a ground where not many teams will come away with a win.

Sports are without a game this Saturday and face a very important away game against third placed Pontlottyn the following Saturday.

The club face its usual Welsh League inspection this week for the right to receive a place in the Welsh League their tenth application after four winning league titles.

With plans for the future the club is ready for the step up with a little matter of winning the league and a play off ahead. They are looking forward to the challenge.
