BARRY'S Andrew Selby has been officially named in the British Lionhearts squad set to compete in this year's World Series of Boxing .

The British Lionhearts squad is made-up of 30 boxers from GB Boxing’s Podium and Podium Potential squads and eight overseas selections, in accordance with the regulations of the World Series of Boxing.

The team’s first home match is at York Hall in London on Thursday, January 15, against the China Dragons.

Andrew Selby, younger brother of Lee, is one of eight Welsh boxers in the squad.

Selby, who competed at London 2012, is a two-time European Champion who won silver and bronze at the 2011 and 2013 World Championships respectively.

Selby is the number two flyweight in the International Boxing Association’s (AIBA) world rankings and the top rated boxer at his weight in WSB, with a record of nine wins and no defeats, after competing for the British Lionhearts in 2012/13 and Italia Thunder in 2013/14.

The British contingent in the Lionhearts squad includes eight English and Welsh medallists from the 2014 Commonwealth Games, notably Antony Fowler, Scott Fitzgerald and Joe Joyce, who won gold in Glasgow. England’s silver and bronze medallists, Qais Ashfaq and Sam Maxwell are part of the squad along with the Welsh trio of Ashley Williams, Sean McGoldrick and Joe Cordina who all secured Commonwealth bronze.

Scotland’s Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Josh Taylor, was not available for selection following a recent hand operation that will keep him out of action until after this season of WSB has finished.

The Lionhearts’ overseas selections include a number of experienced internationals including heavyweight, Ionut-Mirel Jitaru of Romania and Bulgaria’s 2009 world bantamweight champion, Detelin Dalakliev, who will compete for the Lionhearts at lightweight.

The squad will train at GB Boxing’s purpose-built facility at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield and be prepared and led by Rob McCracken who has been named as the Head Coach of the British Lionhearts in addition to his responsibilities as Performance Director of GB Boxing.
