SULLY Sports 2nd 1 V 5 Dinas Powys Athletic

Dinas Powys Athletic headed to BP Sully looking to continue their recent good form but knew they were in for a tough game against last season’s Vale of Glamorgan Division One champions.

The game started at a good tempo with both teams competing well in difficult conditions. Sully created a couple of early half chances and took the lead in the 20th minute when a free-kick was swung into the Athletic box and a Sully player ghosted past the defence and headed past the helpless Hignett in the Dinas goal. This seemed to galvanise the Dinas lads and the midfield of Parsons, Terrar, Salvidge and Whitehead slowly began to take control of the game and supply better service to the front pair of Mills and Stewert.

Stewert was particularly unlucky when he went one on one against the Sully keeper but the keeper made a good save to maintain Sully's 1-0 advantage into half time.

The Dinas management made a couple of changes at half time, bringing on the pace and trickery of Griffiths and Driscoll into the mix in the hope it would turn the possession advantage into goals. The effect was almost immediate when good interchange between Salvidge and Driscoll down the left allowed Salvidge to equalise from seven yards.

The Dinas pressure continued and the second goal quickly followed when Driscoll timed his run perfectly to get in behind the Sully defence and he beat the keeper from a tight angle.

Sully were always dangerous on the counter-attack but the Dinas back four of Llewellyn, Butler, Munn and Halls maintained their focus and showed why they have the best defensive record in the division.

On the 70th minute Dinas scored the decisive goal when Driscoll hit a first time pass from left to right which found the run of Griffiths who beat the keeper with a shot that rolled in off the post.

This seemed to deflate the Sully players and Parsons scored two more goals in the final 20 minutes. The first, a simple but effective interchange with Driscoll down the left which allowed Parsons to burst into the box and strike it past the keeper and the second was a top class piece of control, (like Bergkamp in his prime), which beat two defenders, before a cool finish over the keeper.

This was a great finish to 2014 for them as a club and puts them in a position to challenge the top two teams in 2015.

Huge thanks goes to Danny Munn and Vale Scaffolding who have sponsored the team for the season.
