BARRY Saints walked away with three points after a tough 2-1 win over GCAW (Greek Cypriot Association of Wales).

The Saints hindered by injuries and unavailability over the festive period were only able to call upon 12 players for a difficult fixture against the third in the league team.

The Greeks were looking for a scalp against the unbeaten Saints but came up short. They took the lead when a free-kick on the edge of the box was powerfully converted past stand in keeper Gareth Hegarty.

Saints were creating chances but showed very little conviction, rarely testing the opposition keeper. Doubt was creeping in and the Saints who could get very little going on a small narrow pitch were drawn into a battle.

Half time and harsh but honest words amongst the players seemed to do the trick. Saints came out and began to play some football.

Instantly they were level after some great work, David Evans found space to finish his one on one opportunity low into the bottom corner. The Greeks continued to push forward and Hegarty was called into action stopping a low effort which nearly fell to the opposition winger but full back David A Evans slid in to block.

Saints then grabbed the lead against the run of play. A long throw flicked on by Williams found Darren Townsend to volley home in to the bottom corner.

Saints had numerous chances to put the game beyond the hosts but with two minutes to go the final score could have been different. The Saints had possession in the opposition’s corner but after pushing to many men forward, a long ball over the top found the Greeks quick striker. He squared the ball past the last man to find three unmarked players in the box. Selfishly the midfielder went for glory and was brought down by Hegarty which resulted in a penalty but no card.

Up stepped the quick striker hitting a low powerful effort, only to be outfoxed by Hegarty with a smart save. The rebound popped up in the air which the penalty taker got to first but found his header loop over the bar.

With that the final whistle was blown, Saints playing nowhere near their best but still getting the win and unbeaten into the new year.
