PRESENTATION Night is always a special occasion at Wenvoe Castle Golf Club with the winners of the various club competitions receiving their well earned trophies.
There was a glittering display of silverware and vice president Colin Champ showed considerable stamina in announcing the winners and in total 37 trophies presented for the various men’s, ladies and mixed competitions.
Some competitions were settled on the day but several knock out competitions lasted over many rounds throughout the summer months and the winners had certainly earned their rewards particularly their names engraved in gold leaf on the honours boards.
The Men’s Club Championship had been a stunning contest between the veteran Keith Simpson and Leigh Ivory during which there were no less than 15 birdies shared by both players as the game ebbed and flowed to a thrilling finish.
Over the first 18 holes Keith built up a commanding lead of four holes which increased to six as they began the final stretch. In a tremendous effort to get back in contention Leigh fired a barrage of birdies to get back to just a one hole deficit as the players stood on the 16th tee. Drawing on his vast experience at the highest level Keith then responded with birdies on the next two holes to close out the match 3&1 on the 17th hole and clinch the title for the seventh time. Leigh was denied his first Championship title but played his part in a high quality match and will be long remembered by all the spectators particularly club captain Ken Howells who congratulated both players on match played in a truly sporting manner and a credit to both players.
On receiving the trophy Keith also took the opportunity to thank the head green keeper and the green staff for presenting the course in superb condition not only on the day but throughout the year.
In the Ladies Championship it was to be a new name on the cup with Barbara Beedham and Lynda Campbell challenging for the title for the first time. It was another match over 36 holes in which the tested the quality and stamina of both players.
Barbara gained the upper hand over the first 18 holes and at the half way stage led by four holes. A determined fight back by Lynda closed the gap to just two holes but the match was probably won and lost on the ninth and tenth holes where Barbara won both and extended her lead back to four holes.
Despite a valiant attempt by a very competitive opponent to close the gap the match eventually finished on the 13th hole and where Barbara deservedly clinched the title.
Wenvoe Castle Golf Club certainly has a lot to offer the competitive golfer of all standards and new members are very welcome. There is plenty of opportunity to play social golf and off the course a busy programme is full of events to overcome the disappointment of wayward drives and missed putts. The Club has become a very popular venue for weddings and other celebrations and the Castle Suite is an ideal venue for such occasions.
Why not consider joining as a playing or social member and contact the club secretary Nicola Sims on 02920 594371 who will be delighted to give you the details on membership or use of the facilities.
